  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There are quite a few people who study language. Even there are creationist and evolutionists who have different theorys about where language came from. But I was wondering, does anyone know of any studies that have been done on Body Language? What we communicate to others without using verbal spoken language.

Even perhaps animals can speak some sort of a language to us. Maybe when people go to the zoo they think the monkey is trying to communicate with them, or talk to them. Martha will ask: "George, what do you think that monkey is saying?". If George is a evolutionist, he may tell Martha: "He is saying Hi Aunti, Hi Uncle" :)

Perhaps one reason perhaps people come to this forum. To keep the communication open between creationists and evolutionists. To try to work out our differences, because we all live in the same society and need to get along with one another to some degree. The we have to ask, just how effective is communication. When it comes to body language, the person may think they are trying to get a message across. But what the other person perceive maybe quite a different thing. Some people are quite surprised when they get feedback from others on what others preceive them as saying, be it verbal or non verbal communication.

When creationists look at creation and they see God having created it and still very much an active part of His creation. Then there are evolutionists who look at the world and the universe we live in, and they do not see any sort of a God being a part of it at all. Two people looking at the exact same thing, and coming up with totally different conclusions or opinions on what they are looking at. Even they will come up with a different way to explain the same thing.

So, does anyone know about the art of communication? Esp non verbal communication and body language.

evolution isn't atheism......

but back on topic... are you talking about a sign language (non verbal iow) or "body language" which is quite different, and conveys feeling by position and so on?

I have read books on reading faces and there has been much research on body language. Mostly though there is just opinions and they mean just what it is....ones opinion. Maybe backed up with research but still drawing conclusings that leave illusions what is a illusion. That is why I am so Thankful for the Holy Spirit that Leads us..

I just did a quick online library search for books and materials on the study of body language and was given a return of nearly 2000 hits.

This isn't surprising considering the importance of non-verbal communication in psychology, sociology, zoology and a host of other -ologies. It's a fascinating area.

p.s. Ooooh, just got your monkey joke. Hur hur ...

Actually, I am working on my photography, so I am also doing a study on how to pose the human body. They told me in school that about 2500 years ago, they began to pose the bodys in their art and statutes. Before that time you could roll a statue down a hill and it would not harm it at all. But after that transition, if you were to roll a statue down the hill, the arms and other parts would break off.

If you look at egyptan art, they are very stiff without much freedom of movement or expression.

Is there a photography forum on here?

Animals are very dependent indeed on body language and facial expresions for communication and our pets often use it to try to communicate with us, especially cats.

Non-verbal communication is very effecive indeed and that's one of the reasons why we so easily misunderstand each other we try to communicate on these forums. For that reason, I'm posting this link on The Gentle Verbal Art of Self Defense by Dr. Elgin, who is a applied psycho-linguist. This is an overview of her system.

I probably know enough about the subject to be of some help. The art of communication is a broad subject, John. What did you have in mind?

I remember an excellent program about a guy who used to tame horses using body language alone, in the US I think. He really knew how the horses understood body movements and generated their social structures through it, and he used to exploit this. he could tame a horse within a few days justing this method alone. How true it was I don't know, but the program I saw looked very impressive.

The reason I distinguish between this sort of thing and sign language, is that sign language is effectively verbal kanguace put into form of actions, and is totally different from posturing and so on as described above.

I've heard about the fellow who tames horses using body language, but I don't know anything about him.

Your distinction is an important one, Jet Back. Sign language is verbal speech translated into actions and a different subject entirely. In fact, sign language itself is accompanied by "body language".

Non-verbal communication never stands alone, but always accompanies verbal communication.

I am trying to figure out what makes art, appealing to people. One person suggested that it has something to do with archtypes. Look at the work of Joyce Tenneson and maybe you will see what I mean: http://www.joycetenneson.com/html/assign_people.html#
I do not like everything she has done, but maybe half of it I think is real good:

Yesterday I was at a church picnic and I took a photo of one of the teenage girls at the church. So you can see what I am working on in my photography right now. I want to try and figure out what Tenneson is doing, so I can incorperate it into my work:

yeah, it is definitely interesting how subtle and powerful alot of these visual cues can be.

Did she say it was alright to have her pic on the internet?
She wants to be a model to help pay for her education. Even she wants to try to get into medical school.
BTW, your photography looks absolutely awesome. Seriuosly. I would never be able to do that.
Thanks, it is just like everything else, you have to study it and learn it.
Plus, she kind of lights up the picture. ;) TTYL Jesus loves you!
The light really likes her. Some of the photos have little spashes of light in them that is interesting. I am working with her to help her learn how to pose. Even we are going to do a study on classical poses going back 2500 years to when it first started.

Which pose do you like better, the one on the left of the one on the right?

Try doing this some time: ask the model to just wait whilst you fiddle with the camera. He or she will most probably do what most of us do; start thinking about something else, or daydream. This is a facial moment that can't be faked, so you take a few pics whilst pretending to 'fiddle'.

You're lucky, if I started taking pictures of teenage girls I'd be arrested!

We were at a church picnic and the pastor was about 25 feet from us playing horse shoes. In fact, the whole church was there watching us, so I figured I was pretty safe. Even my wife was there and her mother was not far off. Most photographers will not take photos of minors, because they just do not want to take the risk.

She is going to be 18 soon, so we are getting her portfolio together. She should be good to go when she turns 18. I do not think she will have any problem finding photographers who will want to work with her.

Your favorite scientist, Darwin, wrote an excellent book on body language/facial expressions/emotions. He even printed photos and comparitive studies, measuring and classifing the different types of expressions....but I wont even bother to mention the name of his book, since I doubt you'll even consider reading anything that Darwin Vader the Dark Lord wrote

Sorry to burst the bubble
.no offense but she doesnt look like model material...she doesnt have "the look" and her face is kinda round, plain and featureless, now if she lost 25 pounds to bring out the bone structure in her face, she would look better, but would probably also cause her health problems..but what do I know...nothing except what looks good too me.
