My fav Dylan album ........... Street Legal

and of course ;

Slow Train Coming
Desire
Infidels
Saved
Blood on The Tracks
Shot Of Love
Live in the Budokhan

Fav song ; Changing Of The Guards

Sixteen years,
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves.
Desperate men, desperate women divided,
Spreading their wings 'neath the falling leaves.

Fortune calls.
I stepped forth from the shadows, to the marketplace,
Merchants and thieves, hungry for power, my last deal gone down.
She's smelling sweet like the meadows where she was born,
On midsummer's eve, near the tower.

The cold-blooded moon.
The captain waits above the celebration
Sending his thoughts to a beloved maid
Whose ebony face is beyond communication.
The captain is down but still believing that his love will be repaid.

They shaved her head.
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo.
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale.
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow,
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil.

I stumbled to my feet.
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending 'neath a heart-shaped tattoo.
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you.

The palace of mirrors
Where dog soldiers are reflected,
The endless road and the wailing of chimes,
The empty rooms where her memory is protected,
Where the angels' voices whisper to the souls of previous times.

She wakes him up
Forty-eight hours later, the sun is breaking
Near broken chains, mountain laurel and rolling rocks.
She's begging to know what measures he now will be taking.
He's pulling her down and she's clutching on to his long golden locks.

Gentlemen, he said,
I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes,
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning, either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.

Peace will come
With tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire
But will bring us no reward when her false idols fall
And cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating
Between the King and the Queen of Swords.

i love changing of the guards, one of my absolute favourites, genius song like all of dylan's song. love minus zero/no limit is also such a beautiful song, and the lyrics to bob dylan's 115th dream absolutely crack me up!:D

yes the song is awesome , I am so in touch with the feel of Street Legal , I have even cried several times when listening to it ....... it is a place in Dylan's life where he is being called by Christ to turn his back on the world and his past , and face the NeW challenge of the unknown ........ the agony of killing your oxe and burning it upon the yoke you once used daily in order to be free is both deeply sad and desperatly humbling at the same time ....... the agony of conversion sums up Street Legal .

Where Are You Tonight?

');

There's a long-distance train rolling through the rain, tears on the letter I write.
There's a woman I long to touch and I miss her so much but she's drifting like a
satellite. There's a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze, laughter down on
Elizabeth Street
And a lonesome bell tone in that valley of stone where she bathed in a stream of pure
heat. Her father would emphasize you got to be more than street-wise but he practiced
what he preached from the heart.
A full-blooded Cherokee, he predicted to me the time and the place that
the trouble would start.

There's a babe in the arms of a woman in a rage
And a longtime golden-haired stripper onstage
And she winds back the clock and she turns back the page
Of a book that no one can write.
Oh, where are you tonight?

The truth was obscure, too profound and too pure, to live it you have to explode.
In that last hour of need, we entirely agreed, sacrifice was the code of the road.
I left town at dawn, with Marcel and St. John, strong men belittled by doubt.
I couldn't tell her what my private thoughts were but she had some way of finding
them out. He took dead-center aim but he missed just the same, she was waiting,
putting
flowers on the shelf.
She could feel my despair as I climbed up her hair and discovered her invisible self.

There's a lion in the road, there's a demon escaped,
There's a million dreams gone, there's a landscape being raped,
As her beauty fades and I watch her undrape,
I won't, but then again, maybe I might.
Oh, if I could just find you tonight.

I fought with my twin, that enemy within, 'til both of us fell by the way.
Horseplay and disease is killing me by degrees while the law looks the other way.
Your partners in crime hit me up for nickels and dimes, the guy you were lovin'
couldn't stay clean.
It felt outa place, my foot in his face, but he should-a stayed where his money was
green.
I bit into the root of forbidden fruit with the juice running down my leg.
Then I dealt with your boss, who'd never known about loss and who always was
too proud to beg.
There's a white diamond gloom on the dark side of this room and a pathway that leads
up to the stars.
If you don't believe there's a price for this sweet paradise, remind me to show you the
scars.

There's a new day at dawn and I've finally arrived.
If I'm there in the morning, baby, you'll know I've survived.
I can't believe it, I can't believe I'm alive,
But without you it just doesn't seem right.
Oh, where are you tonight?

what's cool about Dylan? I hadn't heard his songs so I wouldn't know were to start? Could somebody school me?

yes , just get hold of a copy of Live at the Budokan , it has all his hits , they are all superbly re-worked , and there is just so much emotion , both Joyous (All I really want to do) and a tinge of sadness (I want You) , amongst a real interesting atmosphere .........

when you have absorbed that album (it is a double album) then get a hold of Blood on the tracks and Desire ........ and then you will be ready for Street Legal (which is his conversion album) and then the all time greatest Christian album (I am not joking) Slow Train Coming ........ which is Dylan the New man!

^ Months later , get the first 5 records ....... they are sublimly raw .......... you will feel those Hobo blues , and the ice in New York will breathe down your neck!

My #1 favorite song is:

Every Grain of Sand

In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere,
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair.

Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake,
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break.
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand.

Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear,
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer.
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name.
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand.

I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light,
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space,
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face.

I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me.
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand.

Some others I really like:

Ring Them Bells
I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
All Along the Watchtower
Blind Willie McTell
Not Dark Yet
Let Me Die in My Footsteps
I Am A Lonesome Hobo
I Pity the Poor Immigrant
Bob Dylan's Dream
One Too Many Mornings
Like a Rolling Stone
Desolation Row
Shelter From the Storm

i would rather recommend starting off buying his greatest hits albums, then figure out what you like and possibly get blonde on blonde, highway 61 revisited and bringin' it all back home, then blood on the tracks, his latest two albums and biograph. biograph contains a previously unreleased song which i think is his most touching and best song ever, it is severly underrated and it's called "lay down your weary tune". it's beautiful, trust me. happy dylan song hunting, there are so many treasures out there for you to find. good luck! :)

I like Joan Baez singing that song "lay Down your weary Tune " on the film 'No Direction Home' (the name of my blog)

another great tune that didn't make it onto a studio album is , 'Carribean Wind ' I expect you have heard that ....... great song .........

my fav unreleased song (it is obtainable on bootlegs) is 'I ain't gonna go to hell for anybody'

I haven't read all the posts yet - does anybody else absolutely LOVE "Street Legal" or is it just me?
