  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Blu-Ray or DVD?

Have you switched from DVD to Blu-ray?

  • Yes... everything I buy now is on blu ray.

  • No... never plan to get one either. Plain ol' DVD's for me.

  • I plan to get a blu-ray player in the future but for now, nope.

  • I buy some of both... depends on the movie.

DVDs for now. Still don't have an HDTV since we don't watch much tv and watch most movies on the computer at this point since my monitor is HD and large enough.

We'll be getting an HD Projector soon and using a movie server for a home theater though. Then we'll probably get a bluray player.

If something's available on Blu-ray, I'll get it like that, otherwise DVD (of course, lack of funds means that I currently only own one Blu-ray, that being Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11). I don't have a Blu-ray player, but my mom has a BD-ROM in her laptop. Eventually I will get a player, though, seeing as how you can pick one up for about $100-$120 now. I would prefer to hold out until the DivX Plus HD (or just otherwise MKV) enabled Blu-ray players drop in price, though.

I like DVDs because they are cheaper. I also don't watch enough TV to buy an HDTV. Besides, HDTVs and Blu Ray players are expensive. DVD look very good on the right screen. So DVDs for me. I doubt if I will ever switch to Blu Ray.

This is me currently... on a regular TV, they look fine and you can't tell the difference. When I would watch regular DVDs on my brothers huge 54 inch HDTV, then yeah, the picture sucked. But I don't watch enough really to justify a new HDTV and a Blu Ray player...

I really can't tell much of a difference between DVDs and Blu-Ray. With PS2 versus PS3, there is an obvious difference in graphics, but high-definition isn't all that noticeable to me as far as movies go.

Some movies, like District 9, work fine for me with DVD, and some movies, like AVATAR (If I were ever going to buy it), I would buy on Blu-Ray.

It all depends on the movie.

I have blu-ray player but own 0 disks. I got it primarily to watch netflix and downloads from my computer. Love it for that, but looks like the upcoming Boxee and/or GoogleTV will cause my bluray player to be mostly useless.

I, for one, prefer to not own the media. I'll just pay an access fee to watch whatever I want.

But I understand those who want to own the actual disk. I used to be one of you.

slowly but surely there is a shift from DVD to bluray. I see it similar to the shift from BETA tapes to VHS, then VHS to DVD. People didnt want to change, but slowly starting doing so.

Advantage of this time and age is the Internet and Streaming capabilities. Owning a bluray player is advantageous in a couple ways. Not only you get to play DVDs but also Bluray (the old and the new technologies sort of speak). Also quite a few come preloaded with Netflix for streaming, even the PS3 now has a Netflix app via software upgrade.

Internet also provide watching the movies online for free, for instance Hulu. I use services such as this to watch movies so its been a while I dont buy actual media.

I think, just like LunchBox401 said, there will be certain media that I would get on Bluray and some that wont make it to my shelve :)

*edit* I forgot to mention, to truly enjoy the Bluray experience not only you need the right TV (lets say 720p, 1080i or preferably 1080p capable) but also the right cables. For true 1080p use an HDMI cable, the blue-red-green composite will only give up to 1080i

We bought a BluRay Read/Writer on Black Friday for my computer. The price was too good on New Egg so we just decided to go for it. Now I just need a few 2TB drives so I can load movies on it and get my media server up and running for our home theater system. :D
