It's just another one of those trends that goes through the churches from time to time. I don't see anything wrong with it in itself... but I am a tad concerned about the motivation. It seems to be symptomatic of the current obsession that some churches have with all things Jewish and their typically loose understanding and application of such things.

Peace

Exactly. People are messing with stuff that are sacred to the Jewish people, which could be an offense, which is no way to preach Christ.

Many of the pentecostal women that I see carrying their shofars have Yemeni antelope (kudu) horn shofars, which are very pricey, and not the preferred shofar among the Jewish people typically. They carry them around in their shofar bags, and it seems that they break them out any chance they get.

For those who have never seen a kudu:

kabbalah kween madonna has one of her people blowing the shofar onstage:

And this:

quote:

She can bring a pop audience a robed and turbaned singer, Yitzhak Sinwani, who will sing 'Isaac' in Aramaic and sound a shofar, an enormous horn torn from some Brobdingnagian ram. She commissions a crucifix built out of mirrored mosaic bathroom tiles and hangs herself on it for 'Live to Tell'. Madonna still retains the copyright on winding up the Catholic church; a familiar, favourite pose that's perhaps a touch at odds now with her present reverence for another Judaic spin-off sect, the Kabbalah.

Connections and traditions. Aren't they just making connections with worship. Some of use smoke, incense, oils, candles, sing particular songs, stand up, sit down, kneel, fold hands, make a sign of the Cross...etc, all of these physical things help people connect in the process of worship.

If it helps one get or feel closer to God to blow a sheep's horn, then by all means blow it. Let's hope those around you feel the same way about it.

For me the smells, sights and sounds are all part a process that help me connect. Know whenever I smell particular incense or oils it immediately reminds me of Church, God,...etc. Perhaps the horns do the same for these people.

What is up with all of the Christians blowing the shofar these days at every chance they get? It seems like every Christian bookstore is selling them now.
There's something in the makeup of humanity that loves symbols and traditions; to see, smell, touch, taste, and hear worship. Modern protestantism has, for the most part, ditched it's own traditions, and people are feeling the lack. Judaism seems a reasonable place to go, both because most of their traditions were directly ordered by God, and because they're not Catholic (sad, but true reason). Sometimes when a tradition is old enough to be nearly forgotten, it manages to come back as though it were a new thing, and not a tradition at all.

Just my theory

My old church bought a shofar back in 2001 or so. The pastor called for it to be blown whenever he was about to do a "home run" sermon (which, most of his tried to be). I thought it was nothing more than a tool to get people whipped up into the spirit (this was a Church of God (Cleveland, TN) church).

I don't think blowing the shofar in of itself is wrong in worship (to me it's just another instrument), but I don't think it has any ceremonial value anymore, not to Christians.

Well, shofar's were trumpets of the OT, and I suppose more or less the symbolism behind them is why everone's using them.

I can't remember the reference, but theres a verse that says "Behold, I blow a trumpet [shofar] in Zion."

Biblical examples...

1) Anytime the Israelites went into battle
2) Walls of Jericho came down with a shout and blowing of the shofar
3) Gideon and his men won a battle by their torches and shofars.

etc..etc..

It's just a sign of victory over the enemy.
