Trying my hand at block relief printing using woodcut techniques but not with wood. I’ve been printing in a sketchbook my son used in elementary school.

I don't know the first thing about that medium. How does it work?

They look interesting!
Thanks! It works by carving or cutting a mirror image of the subject into a substance like wood or linoleum (Lino cut) and then inking up that carved image and the pressing the carving into paper to transfer the ink. Sometimes you need to carve multiple plates to accommodate several colors. The impressionists were inspired by the Japanese woodblock prints. I m thinking of it as elaborate stamping. (Like what scrapbookers do with those rubber stamps they sell at craftstores) It’s basically like making diy stamps but with several layers of stamps that ideally fit together to form a multi colored image. I was able to print the scull and elephant with just two stamps (a lower stamp with a dark and then a stamp over top with a lighter value. I could add stamps for highlights and accents or other details if desired. The pros use printing presses but it can be done by hand. I might make a diy press with c clamps someday. Some people use these blocks to print diy t shirts or wallpaper or even purses. Etc

ah ok, that makes sense! My kids did some of that in school, I just wasn't making the connection. I think I would struggle with that, but they really enjoyed it. Seems challenging.

Good start to the medium.
I have always been a fan of the types of printing. My personal choice is etching the traditional way.
Thanks! I haven’t tried etching yet but intend to. I’ve been watching demos on etching with household chemicals like vinegar and coke over aluminum and one with salt water and a 9 volt battery with alligator clips. I did try an engraving in plexiglass of an elephant but I don’t have a press so it didn’t print clearly enough. Thanks again!
