I got new shoes for the gym a little while back. Well, these last few weeks I have been doing cardio at the gym 5-6 times a week for about 40 minutes a time. Anyway, I got a blister on the side of my left ankle (near the heel) and it hurts sooooo bad! Yet I have continued to exercise because I really need to. It is agony though for most of the time that I am doing cardio. I have tried blister bandages, extra padding...nothing seems to work to take away the pain. And the other thing is, it is never healing. Each time I do cardio the skin is rubbed again and so it continues to bleed.

Advice? Ideas? Thanks!

Yeah, when I first started running the first pair of shoes I bought gave me blisters on my ankles. I kept using them for a while hoping the part of the shoe that was rubbing would soften up and things would improve...no such luck though, ended up buying a different pair of shoes.

So yeah, I think since the problem is persisting a new pair of shoes is in order.

Most likely your shoes don't fit right. Did you try them on with the same pair of socks you work out in?

I'd go to a sports store and get fitted with a proper pair of shoes. Shoes can really mess you up if they're wrong for you and you're exercising a lot.

In addition, when you get fitted for shoes, take them outside for a jog (just up and down the street). If it is a place that is actually fitting you for running shoes, they will almost always let you try them out for a minute.

Indeed. I never buy shoes I haven't tested out -- even when it's the same make as the last pair.

You should probably takea couple days off of your feet. That doesn't mean no exercise -- just focus on something that doesn't require you wearing shoes that rub up against your blisters. Take a yoga or pilates class. Do some push-ups and sit ups. But you've got to give yourself a chance to heal.

I used to run a lot a few years ago. And I never had problems with blisters because I always buy my running shoes 1/2 or 1 size larger than my shoe size. I'm really a 7.5 but I run in a size 8. Why? Because when we run, walk, or exercise our feet get slightly swollen, so there has to be a little extra room in your shoe for this. I got this tip of advice from Running Magazine.

Just increase your shoe size by at least 1/2 and see how that goes. It should make everything better.

Hope it helps,
Angel Gabrielle

Good point, where I buy my shoes I can try them out on the indoor track where I work for a couple of weeks! It is impossible to tell untill you try them. J

When I run/speed walk on my treadmill for an hour my toes bleed. I am ruining a lot of socks. I just can't figure why my toes are bleeding. My tonails are clipped. (???)

I didn't think it would be a good idea to go a half a size up but maybe I'll try that. (???)

Yep, go half a size bigger on your running/walking shoe or any shoe for that matter. Also, how are your toe nails clipped? Straight or curved? Because if they're curved, they might have grown into the flesh and with the pounding on your feet and toes while walking / running, it might be the reason why they're bleeding. Always remember, we're suppose to trim our finger nails in a curve and trim our toe nails in a straight line to avoid in-grown nails.

Thank you for the nail clipping advice. I didn't know that.
:)

This is such an important point. I get a pedicure every three weeks, otherwise my toenail will really hurt and/or I will lose a nail:help:

Really???? A pedicure???? I've never had one. Sometimes I have such horrible trobbing pain in my big toe in the toenail area.
This is interesting!! Maybe I should get a pedicure and see if it will help with my toe pain. Plus it will make my feet look nice.
Thanks!!!

Oh, I'm planning on getting a pedicure too! *yeah*

But about your big toe hurting. I think you do have an ingrown toenail.

One must be careful. At one time, I was starting to get an ingrown toenail. The nail was digging into the flesh, so I took a something pointy but not sharp and attempted to insert it between the nail and the flesh in an effort to seperate them. Then, this is the important and critical part, I pushed a very small piece of cotton into the wedge I had created. This helped the nail from digging and growing into the flesh. The only place or direction the nail had to grown in, was upward and over the flesh. No more ingrown toenail!

Now I make sure I always cut my toenails staight across, especially the big toe. I learned this useful tip from reading Runner's Magazine.

Hope it helps,
Angel Gabrielle
