Blessed salt is a sacramental and "chases away" evil. Accordingly, if you bring some salt to the rectory, a priest should be able to bless it. It used to be part of any Baptism ceremony (but not anymore--why? I haven't a clue). Anyway, am I the only one who still keeps some?

BTW, here is a prayer for salt. any amount of which may be presented to a priest, using the following official prayer from the Roman Ritual:

Almighty God, we ask you to bless this salt, as once you blessed the salt scattered over the water by the prophet Elisha. Wherever this salt is sprinkled, drive away the power of evil, and protect us always by the presence of your Holy Spirit. Grant this through Christ our Lord Amen

Kwl. Thanks for the prayer. I have lots of blessed salt in my home and use it regularly (at least once a month, inside and outside the house, as well as the car. :) Along with my holy water.

I was told by my X that I over do it. He didn't understand, he wasn not Catholic :sigh:. Good thing my BF is  I learned by my mistakes, and he has no problem with me using any of it, of course.

I've heard of it but always felt funny about asking a priest to bless it. It kind of sounds superstitious like some other Catholic things. So I've never used it or had any.

I have a problem with defining whats superstitious & whats simple faith at times. :(

I agree, being able to see the grace in sacrementals can be hard at times, I feel kinda "silly" when it comes to stuff like this

This salt is used at Baptisms.

Salt used to be used in Baptisms, but I can safely say that I haven't seen it used in one in 37 years!

No I don't know when or why the practice was stopped. Does anyone know?

I have like a metric ton....lol! I have resorted to just using it in everything I make and asking for conversion and holiness for those who consume it. LOL!

So you can use it in cooking? What happens if the food is not eaten and thrown away?

If we can cook with it, I'm going to put it in everything.

Wish I knew that you could cook with it when I was married. ^_^ I just thought of something, why not just put it in the salt shaker? Instead of putting it in the food, because you have the potential of tossing out the food. Then who uses it on their food, will have blessed salt. Just a thought.

I put uneaten food in the compost-so I liken that to "burying" it, which is one of the options for disposing of sacramentals.

No one in our family salts food-except eggs and potatoes, LOL! we don't even have a salt shaker...we have a salt bowl next to the oven-so I can throw it in food by the pinchful while I cook.
