  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey, Infernal :). I'm sure you are not the only one on this board who likes black metal. I personally quite like dark rock, metal et. - the musicianship of some of those bands is incredible! It's just unfortunate that many bands (especially in the black metal scene) are driven by anti-religious lyrics. I don't have a problem with bands questioning religion and philosophical ideas, but the lyrics of some black metal bands are a bit too anti-Christian for my liking :sigh:.

Peace,
Nick

I am more into power metal though. ;)
Go power metal! \m/ :D

I agree with Alchemist - the musicianship (especially the guitarwork) is amazing, in not only Black Metal, but Death Metal also. My only hang-ups would be the militant anti-Christian lyrics (I have no problem with people questioning faith or criticising Christianity, but when they move to the 'join-us-and-let's-destroy-it' mentality, I'm out), and the growling. I'm not a fan of any band where the lead singer just growls or screams the lyrics incoherently, no matter how great the music itself sounds.

MY MOST INFERNAL HAILS TO YOU MY FRIEND (and to the others as well of course!)

You mention good bands, out of your list I completely adore all Drudkh, Burzum (Varg said he will make guitar based BM again for he now is allowed to have a guitar in his cell), Ulver, Nachtfalke and maybe some Abyssic Hate. My personal adds would be Nargaroth, Taake, Noenum, Mystic Forest, Forest Of Fog, Bilskirnir, Lunar Aurora, Paysage D'Hiver, Vlad Tepes, Eternal Majesty, Nagelfar, Belenos, Nachtmystium, Odium Immortalis, Woods Of Ypres, Baptism, Draugar, Hate Forest, Forest, A Forest, Eikenskaden, Moonblood, Mütiilation, well I could go on like forever with this! I'm a totally dedicated fan of black art (especially the raw and nature oriented underground) and I write reviews for www.metalreviews.com (my name is Misha there) There is a forum on that site with a small but very active community that has a lot of underground black metal heads like yourself and me. I NEVER expected anyone that listened to this kind of music on these forums. Hails!!!

Idicious, I'm very glad you liked the Mystic Forest! It's a lot like early Ulver ablaze eh? I noticed you liked Eluveitie, one Member of that band has a Side Project and that project is Forest Of Fog, which I remember telling you about. Small world :)

Infernal Freak, what are your favorite bands? I'm really curious now since not a lot of girls seem to get into bands like Darkthrone

I doubt it. Black Metal is quite popular these days. I"m sure there's kids here who like it.

That's usually the more commercial bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth that's so popular, name a few of the greats in the genre and most of those will never have heard of them ;)

Actually the greatest in the genre are pure underground...

True, but you have like 3 levels of black metal :p

1 (usually average at best to very poor): Bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir etc etc etc
2 (includes many classics etc, lot of bands are great, though bands from all different levels are in it): Bands like Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Bathory, Burzum, Satyricon etc.
3 (including everything from brilliant to worst ever): The real underground/less known including many local bands etc that have only released a few limited demo's etc with bands like Mystic Forest, Taake (though better known), Frosthardr etc. Most people even into underground will not have heard of 90% of the bands in it ;)

Nice analasis, although I would count bands like Immortal and Mayhem to the first group (Emperor as well I guess), and later Satyricon now belongs to the Cradle bunch as well. Old Cradle was once in the second, I still like albums like V-Empire. For me personal, Burzum and Ulver are the best bands from the second group. I have a theory that almost all true BM is directly descendent of five big names: Burzum, Ulver, Darkthrone, Emperor and Ildjarn, I think I covered everything except norsecore there (Mayhem and Immortal descendants). Underground is my biggest passion, and indeed, although I am fairly deep into the scene, I have heard approximately 5 to 10%. Consider that over 2500 works of black art were released in 2004 alone. As you claim correctly, some of it is garbage, but most of it has sense, and some of it is extremely good. The underground produces music for the sake of music, not for the sake of money. You state too that those bands have a few limited demos, but that is not true, for they averagely have released just as many albums as any other band. Still, there are some exceptions, black metal's second era was not just about those that appear most, the underground was present to date. It is indeed a fact that some bands tend to put very strict limitation on their albums, such as a 100, 500, 666 or 1000 copies. Some bands even refuse to release on anything other than LP as well. Although it is far harder to get by an album like that, it also enhances the listening experience when you know that only 665 people have that rare and wanted record you are playing, plus LP is a great format.

I'm a big BM freak. I prefer synth black metal over raw though.
I don't mind "a bit" of Darkthrones stuff, I like some of Mayhemsn stuff; I think early Bathory kicks butt. However, I'm mostly into synth; allthough I do have a soft spot for the raw and brutal power of 'Marduk' and I like the raw but atmospheric sound of Dissections "storm of the lights bane"{one of the best black metal albums ever in my opinion}.
Dimmu Borgir is my favorite BM band[yeah I know they are'nt considered BM by so called "trooists", but I don't care what they think, they just envy the creativity, uniquenesss and skill of bands Like BM and a few of the other synth bands/progreessive BM bands I will mention} I also think Cradle Of Filth{all, but especially newer} is great progressive gothic black metal.
I like Dark Funeral a bit, Setherial, Lord Belial, Immortal, Old Mans Child, Emperor,Naglfar, and some others....

As far as their anti-christian lyrics, well...beeing an ex-christian myself whom now strongly dislikes Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity{though I have litttle to not against liberal Christianity}, I get a kick outa that stuff now for cathartic reasons. However, I do agree that some of these bands go over the top in the violence towards Christians, I myself don't agree w/blind nihilistic hate and think it gives Satanism a bad name{allthough 'hate' and 'anger' are indeed good things; I think they are good only in moderation personally}.
I myself hope to stary an anti-christianity band at some point{I do vox and write lyrics}, but my lyrics would'nt be blind violence and hate w/out just cause; I probbaly would not write and{or very little} violent war like lyrics and NO murderous lyrics towards christians myself, because I do not hate ALL christians-not even all fundies and evangelicals{I ecven have family members and close friends that are such, one of my best friends is one}; my lyrics would challenge the claims of the Christian fundamentalist faith and the Bible and the moral integrity og Biblegod, but that is probbaly about it; w/maybe a few songs of warfare{in fact I have written one such song so far, but it isn't about the armis of satan triumphing over christs or something, it is a song about Fundamentalist/absolutist faithists of variuos revealed religions starting a war w/the freethinking and democratic world and the them defending themselves against the oppreessiona nd violence perpetrated on them by the revealed religionists; I even promote Liberla faith/liberal christianity in the song as an ok thing}; I've got an idea in mind for a song about the unfair atrocities commited on the Midianites and especially their children and virgin daughters by the armies of Ancient Israel under the command of Moses by the supposed commands of Jehovah.
These Kinds of intelligent and thought provoking challenging and intellectaul lyrics are what I think secular metal and BM even could use more of.

I like Dimmu's newer albums because they are'nt as blindly violent as say their old stuff like "tormentor of christian souls"{a great song nonetheless for catharsis}: They are a little more intellectual, balanced,Reasonable than alot of their older stuff and alot of BM.

But, then Christian music is anti-the world and against EVERY other religion that is not fundy/evangelical christinaity as some form of evil decpetion{even liberal christianity}, so they kinda ask for it. If they can blindly and unfairly/biasedly accuse the entire world and all it's beleifs/unbeliefs, then they can take some potshots from the BM community can't they? After all it's only fair, they are reaping as they've sown.
