  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

CeeBee (hehe) I'm not sure what part of your comment you're thinking could be perceived as racist but...yeah, the south in general is a haven for non-Catholic Christians so I can see how your perception that not many Black people are Catholic could exist. Although I live in Chicago, I worked in Alabama with Habitat for Humanity one spring break, and I remember how few and far between Catholic churches were. (I even got told in a Walmart that I was going to hell for being Catholic by a quality toe-headed young man who was trying to pick me up before he learned the truth about my satanic religion...same guy thought that because we were from Chicago we had killed people before -- obviously he hadn't been brainwashed with misnomers *rolls eyes*)

Well, the reason that Black Americans are traditionally not Catholic is because Blacks were originally brought to America by mostly Protestants and most slave owners were Protestant. So, the Black slaves were exposed to the Protestant religion. There were Catholics in Maryland, Lord Baltimore was Catholic and probably owned Black slaves. But, by and large the Southern states were dominated by Protestants, with a lot of Baptists.

Since many people are strongly influenced by the culture they grow up in regarding religion, Blacks have traditionally been Protestant, particularly Baptist and Methodist. But, obviously, many Black Americans are discovering Catholicism today. Plus, of course Africa has a lot of Catholics.

What I think is odd is that one of my books on Catholicism says taht most blacks are Catholic but where I live (Louisiana) there are many blacks but I don't think any Catholic blacks, or extremely few... Just wondering, ya know. Oh, and not trying to be rascist either.
We have many black parishes in New Orleans CeeBee.

K thanks guys. Yeah, I guess, that many Africans are Catholic, that shows it thanks. Zoomom, lol. Most Catholics around here are Italian or, you guessed it (I'm from Louisiana) French.
Plenty of Irish ones too, (the Irish Channel sound familiar to you) and also Spanish. We even have a Vietnamese parish out by UNO.

I don't know about 'most'. We have a very good ethnic mix at my parish. Whites, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Yankees...

;)

We have a special missalette for Yankees. Right after the part of explaining who can receive communion, it thanks them for visiting but reminds them to go home when their visit is over. It also has a special pronunciation guide for the English language tailored just for them^_^ :D ^_^

^_^ Yep...I am one of those dang yankees and I can promise you it will take more than a reminder to go home to get me out of here!

I have to say that at our church (here in the buckle of the Bible Belt)...Yankees is the predominant group! :D A few "boll weevil" Lutherans and fewer Black Lutherans. My brother's Catholic church in Atlanta is incredibly diverse...not just race but socio-economic, age, you name it. Very nice to go to that chruch and see that.

Peace

Rose

That's really great! I wish we were more diverse... we're pretty much a bunch of whities... I'm so glad that our parish is getting more Latinos though, as I want my children to be exposed and have appreciation for diverse cultures... I was especially happy when we had an African American priest (he was a convert from Baptist).
