Bishop Barron’s call for hierarchy to police Catholic media is a recipe for disaster

What an utterly terrible article. It's precisely this sort of farcical hit-job that Barron is cautioning against.

From the NCR article:

At the same time, [Barron] encouraged the rising generation, “who have social media in their blood and their fingers,” to delve deeply into the Church’s intellectual and spiritual tradition and dedicate their use of these technologies.

Warner stressed that Catholics should look at both Benedict XVI’s and Pope Francis’ teachings on communications and make sure to take seriously both their encouragements and their cautions about social media and the need to uphold the dignity of the human person on these platforms.

Prejean said the key for her and others on social media will be finding that right balance, to know when to use it and, importantly, when to turn it off, keeping sight of the most important things in the life God has given them.

“Living life in front of you is always better, always better, than anything you will ever do online,” she said.

“I would also give the following spiritual advice,” Bishop Barron said. “Before you say or write anything on social media — whether you are publishing your own material or responding to someone else — ask this simple question: Do these words of mine constitute an act of love?”

Yes that has been posted here as well.

A whimper that is far, far too little, and far too late.:(

Where was Bishop Barron when the Vatican offices were being shuffled, and good priests were being moved out?
Where was he when the Dubia authors were being snubbed and removed from their previous posts?
Where was he just last week when the silent witnesses were in Germany, standing up publically for what they believed?

If the Hierarchy in charge now were to police (stifle) the Catholic media, we would be seeing Act II of "The Years of Debauchery", quietly continued, just as before.

Only the surface of the problem was revealed two years ago. But the entrenched clergy that continue in their ways would probably be glad to have an "approved" shot at those who want to expose them as tares in a field of wheat.

Oh, does this remind me of a reversal reading of the Parable of the Wheat and the Tares" Matthew 13:24-30.
In scripture it is the tares that are weeded out. But what we have seen proposed above by Bishop Barron is the opposite: it is the Wheat that is suffering.:(

As stated in the piece, what about Fr. James Martin and others?

The basic problem with this article and this title is that it erroneously claims that what is being called for is "policing" and "censure." A mandatum relates to policing and censure no more than a nihil obstat or an imprimatur do. A secondary problem is that the article just completely ignores the social media problem, not even acknowledging it.

I think the problem with Fr. James Martin is that the Left Wing Media got hold of his verbiage and became enamored with him. The Right Wing was embarrassed by him, and no one quite knew what to do with this new way of seeing the Catholic Church.

An interesting concept, but in the end how practical is it, AND who has the time to supervise the posts of everyone who for whom they are responsible?

In the end, we are mostly all adults who have these gadgets, and are pushing these buttons. Fortunately these gadgets also have edit functions which are very useful, should enlightenment drag behind our speedy, flexible fingers.
I edited in this very thread. No matter how true I believe it is.

Bishop Robert Barron, the Los Angeles auxiliary and Catholic media personality, recently suggested to the National Catholic Register that bishops “introduce something like a mandatum for those who claim to teach the Catholic faith online, whereby a bishop affirms that the person is teaching within the full communion of the Church.” Critics pounced, arguing that this would amount to censorship of lay criticism of bishops. But these responses misrepresent and miss the value of the bishop’s suggestion. A system like the one Bishop Barron proposes could make the online world much more useful to Catholics, lay and clerical alike.

In today's world of social media these things need to be dealt with from inside out. Meaning they can definitely police official Catholic clergy and institutions but policing John Doe who claims to be a trustworthy source of proper Catholic teachings it pert near impossible.

The CC could create a emblem which any John Doe could register to display showing they qualify by holding to the criteria set by this system. Keeping in mind all of the details still need to be worked out.
