I know this is really stupid and superficial, but I can't help but getting upset about this. What happened is my sister's birthday is today. She lives in New York, and it's her first birthday away from home (Iowa) so my mom ordered her a surprise cake (cost $25) to be sent to her office and a gift certificate to be sent to her from her favorite restaurant (cost $25).

At first I was really happy and excited for her birthday and the things we were doing to make it special for her (my other sister and I sent her a package). But everytime my mom called to place another order for her she kept on saying things like "this is her first birthday away from home." Ok, you're probably wondering what the problem is because I'm babbling, but the reason I'm having a problem with this is because I go to school in Texas and my b-day is in February. And my last birthday was my first birthday away from home and all I got from my mom was a card and $15. I know it's stupid because it's just material things and shouldn't matter, but it really makes me feel like I'm the unwanted daughter.

Any suggestions for me to get over this?

Easy. Sometimes parents forget that they have an obligation to treat all their children with the same amount of love. What you experienced is normal. I myself would probably act the same way, it is only natural to do so. But then get over it. It's only material things which we can't take when we die, right?....

Talk to your mom about it. Parents do change over time. The dad I had in high school was a lot different than the dad my youngest brother had...even though it's the same guy.

I also understand about not getting what the sibling got. My parents were a lot better off for my brother and hence he got better stuff than I did. It wasn't favoritism or anything, it's just that things were different. I got a card when I was a freshman and he got a care box...
