  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It sounds like when you bike, your not really pushing it, its just a relaxing ride. So I would say walking is better in this case. But if you really up the pedal rpms, and maintan pedal pressure by upshifting (consistant and constant pressure) then you can burn alot more cycling than walking. And distance does make a differnce.

When I ride I go about 30 or 40 miles, and I on my mountin bike avg. 19 mph is pretty good.

I would prefer to see you bike as its less impactful on your body over the years. Also if you start pushing yourself the bike can easily become a full body workout. Plus you can get about town so much faster on a bike, it takes me the same time to travel six miles to work on a bike as it does on a car, and I don't work up a sweat getting to work. Wakes me up and I feel great at work when I do bike. If I have some tension I need to work out I ride a little aggressively with traffic or if I am tired and sluggish I just ride along at 10mph or so and just keep the cadence slow so I just plug along.

One point to consider, cars do not respect bicyclists and punk teenagers will mess with you a little if you are on the road. I have been hit once and near hits a few dozen times.

Also, walking is funner in bad weather conditions, need fenders on a bike. And if you want to keep your heart rate up, deflate your tires and a little and keep it in one gear and just work work work.

My bike does not have gears, it’s a single speed Raleigh that I bought because it was so pretty—this is a picture of my bike:

The other thing is that I live in Florida and there really isn’t hills for me to worry about. There are a couple of places on the bike trails—which are paved by the way—with a slight incline, but nothing I would need to use a multi-speed bike for.

Now that's a cool looking bike!

Thank you. I wasn’t really in the market to get a bike, but I saw this one and it was just so lovely. And then I thought about all the miles and miles of paved bike trails near where I live—and it was my birthday; so my hubby bought it for me as a birthday present and I’ve loved it ever since.

I've heard support for both biking & walking, & I think, as some people ahve said, it all depends on the effort you put into it.

Someone mentioned the wear & tear on our bodies that walking does - well, biking does, too, in its own way, especially if you're an extreme sort of biker. Also, both of these exercises work a body differently & have different impact on people.

I think, as others have said, the key is to make the effort to push yourself & to work hard at whatever exercise you do. Also, have fun & think of the rewards & the benefits to yourself. If you don't enjoy it, at least most of the time, you won't keep up with it, most likely. Thinking about the good you're doing for yourself is a real incentive for some people as well.
