Big Bang Theory

Anyone else watch this? I'm really loving it -- just started last week. I've checked out a few of the DVDs from the library.

I think it's allowing me to finally enjoy being nerdy, not that I'm brilliant or even into science, but I relate to Sheldon who is very fact-driven, literal and sure of himself. It's fun to find a character who is in some ways very innocent and yet marching to his own drumbeat.

I've just almost finished season 3, Wallowitz is my favorite character he is just such a jerk, you have to laugh. I found Sheldon kinda irritating at first but he really grew on me, the Will Wheaton episodes are really good if you ask me.

The Texan sayings his mom taught him are hilarious.

This is one of those shows that has a lot of quotable lines -- perfect for geeky fans. There are T-shirts out there with Sheldon's face on it, the algorithm for how to make friends and the diagram that explains "rock paper scissors lizard Spock."

Personally, I'd rather NOT see Sheldon hook up with a woman because I think that relationship would take over the show. But Mayim Bialik is a great choice if they're going to set him up with a girlfriend. From the rumors, it sounds like she's going to be in numerous episodes.

Er I think he had a few sort of romantic interests but I don't want to say too much because I might end up spoiling it for some people, although I did notice in the last few episodes of season 3 they did seem to be starting something? The tags don't seem to work on this site? : ( Most of my personal friends love the show, it seems to be doing really well.

Some cool quotes:

"Howard Wolowitz: If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy"."

"Sheldon: I'm polymerized tree sap and you're an inorganic adhesive, so whatever verbal projectile you launch in my direction is reflected off of me, returns to its original trajectory and adheres to you."

LOL! Those are great quotes. I liked the tree sap one too when I heard it.

Because I'm getting the DVDs from the library, I'm watching the series out of order. Or as Sheldon would say, non-sequentially. I've seen the last half of season 2, a handful of episodes from season 1, and the first and last episodes of season 3. It's actually kinda interesting ( in a nerdy sort of way) to compare how the characters change season to season. Penny changes a lot as she becomes more familiar with the guys. I think it takes awhile for writers and actors to figure out what the characters are really like. To me it seems like Wolowitz and Raj have been the most consistent -- maybe because they are less complex characters.

I've thought more than a few times that Kaley Cuoco (Penny) channels Jennifer Aniston in her facial expressions.

Thanks, glad you liked them I'll see if I can scratch up some more somewhere.

I've also missed a few episodes from Season 2, I don't think you have to watch sequentially it probably helps a bit though but I don't think it is absolutely necessary, unless the romance arcs are a big thing for you? (The show doesn't seem to take itself that seriously but it is consistent.)

Well I'd say that they all seem to have developed pretty well (Your are right though that Raj and Wallowitz are side characters), although I think that Sheldon is the real star because a lot of the episodes seem to give him more screen time and importance. I never thought that about Penny but I suppose I can see a bit of Jen in her although her character does seem to be a bit of a wild child apposed to Jen's more structured character.

Now the long wait for season 4. : (

I agree that Sheldon seems to be the star of the show. Maybe that's because his character is the most neurotic and therefore creates the most drama. I personally find him the most interesting, although I'm fond of Leonard as well (I see Leonard as the "heart" of the show).

I'm sort of glad that I'm seeing the episodes out of order because the romantic arc (Leonard-Penny) isn't so pronounced. It allows me to enjoy the characters and the situations without being distracted by "When will they get together???" Of course, I can see how the tension builds in the series, based on the episodes I've seen -- a kiss here, a conversation there.

Yeah, you're right about Penny being wilder than Rachel. Maybe the only similar thing is just an occasional facial expression or the way Penny says a phrase. Sometimes I wonder if actors consciously imitate other actors; some actors have said they are influenced by the work of others, especially in comedy. Or maybe there are only so many gestures and vocal inflections...

Going back to Sheldon, at first his character seemed to be dorky but aware of women/sex. Like there was a line in season 1 in which he says something about how the only guy who doesn't want sex is a man who just had it. But in some later episodes, it's as if he could care less about women (like the episode where there's a gorgeous new neighbor upstairs and all the other guys are falling all over her).

So hey are we the only two Big Bangers on CF? Any others out there?

ETA: I seem to be a little too into this show. Perhaps I should go post on CBS.com's fan page instead! lol...

Yeah Sheldon is just crazy, I wonder if there are people that strange in real life? Leonard is quite cool but I was slightly annoyed with him at first, he also grew on me. Walowitz is still the most fun character in my opinion.

Oh I hear you on that one. These romantic arcs can be so draining, I'm watching Chuck at the moment and it's always on/off, on/off somebody put them out of their misery already. It just gets annoying after a while but I like everything else about the show.

I'm not really sure on that one but I think that Penny is mostly her own character for me anyway.

I think he is aware of it (you'll hear him say coitus a lot.) but it just doesn't seem to interest him at all, quite unusual for a TV character.

It looks like it for now, usually these boards are sort of quiet, if someone moved the thread or started it again in the Christian Singles Forum, it'd probably do a lot better. But hey 77 views, at least somebody is reading it.

Well that is one option I've heard that imdb forums are also pretty decent. Hope it works out for you. Watch out for spoilers.

For those, apparently few on these forums, who are addicted to this show, I would like to propose a "You know you are addicted to TBBT when..." idea ;)

For example-
...When you and at least one friend or family member challenges to "Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock".

Today we were talking Dilly Bars vs Orange/Vanilla bars from DQ, and we couldn't decide, so my son says "I think we are now facing a Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock moment".
Yeah, we played it :D

My lizard poisoned his Spock.

Yeah, we're addicts of this show.

You might be addicted to TBBT when...
...you and your entire family sings the theme song OUT LOUD, with hand gestures for the words "wait" and the last "bang" in the song.

YMBA to TBBT when-
.... you start reading about what they talk about on the show.

YMBA to TBBT when-
... your friends and family know NOT to call you on Mondays after 9:30 pm.

haha, that's funny, Dr. D. I love the rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock bit. Haven't played it though.

YMBA to TBBT when...

You include "Bazinga!" in your email or CF signature. :sorry:

YMBA to TBBT when...

You Google Mayim Bialik (the actress playing the woman Sheldon just met) and approve of the fact that she got a bachelor's degree in neuroscience.

YMBA to TBBT when ...
You already knew what I just wrote about Mayim Bialik. ^_^

Are you kidding me?
My son and I also had a RPSLS moment. He wanted McDonalds, I wanted Subway, and my son said "It is time for rock paper scissors lizard spock". Like you, my lizard poisoned his spock. ^_^

YMBA to TBBT when you start buying comic books again, after 20 years. Yeah, I just got 3 original issues (# 5, 9 and 10)of "The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe" (1983). Yeah, the originals from the early '80's. Sweetness!

YMBA to TBBT when you offer a "soft" sarcastic comment and then, when the recipient of said sarcasm doesn't get it, you say "Bazinga".\

YMBA to TBBT when you have found (and requested for your birthday and Christmas gifts) the "RPSLS" tee-shirt (with ruled printed on it) along with the "Friendship algorithm" tee-shirt. (want links??)

Dr. D......great idea, amongst us few, us happy few :)

Your children might be TBBT addicts when they ask about dark matter, string theory and who is George Smoot? (and they WANT a full explanation).
You are truly a TBBT addict when you can explain all of the above to any degree ^_^

You are even MORE of a TBBT addict when you *understand* the joke made by Smoot in TBBT.
