For some of us, the poem expresses our ideals as Americans. How do you make your values into "our values" if you do not include everyone in the US?

It might express your ideology as an individual. As we see every single day in these threads our ideals as individuals are not in agreement. And often have nothing to do with actual governance.

Congress isn't passing laws based upon some poem written by some Frenchman. It'd be like writing a law based upon the song War because it happens to say its not good for anything. So lets just outlaw war. No war no matter what because the song says so.

Still, you have no authority to dismiss the poem as not reflective of American values--only as not reflective of your values.

Sure I can if I am referencing the values of governance. Because our government has not used the poem to create immigration policy. Its not an immigration value of the American government. Otherwise we would just have open borders. And thats just stupid.

Its a dumb poem. Its not part of the Constitution or laws.

You are correct in that we vote for representatives that most closely represent our values. They often dont represent all.of them, but represent some. The fact that we haven't i corporate the poem into our immigration laws tells you its not the nations values in governance. If it were then we would have done so.

Texas Talks Tough on Immigration. But Lawmakers Won’t Force Most Private Companies to Check Employment Authorization.​

Texas’ conservative Legislature has again and again refused to mandate that most private businesses use E-Verify. Experts say that Republican resistance is rooted in how the system could impact the state’s labor supply and economy.​

In a half-empty committee room in late April, one of Texas’ most powerful Republican state senators pitched legislation that would make it harder for immigrants in the country illegally to get jobs.

No one spoke against the new legislation. The bill went on to sail through the committee and the Senate.

But then, like dozens of E-Verify bills over the last decade, the legislation died.

Since 2013, GOP lawmakers in Texas have introduced more than 40 E-Verify bills. Most tried to require the program for government entities and their contractors, but about a dozen attempted to expand the system to private employers in some capacity. With few exceptions, like mandating E-Verify for certain state contractors, Republican legislators declined to pass the overwhelming majority of those proposals.

This session, lawmakers filed about half a dozen bills attempting to require private companies to use the program. Kolkhorst’s legislation was the only one to make it out of either legislative chamber but eventually died because the state House did not take it up.

“If you got serious about applying [E-Verify], you would create even worse problems” with labor shortages, said Bill Hammond, a GOP former state lawmaker who once led the Texas Association of Business. “Do you want to go to a restaurant and use paper plates because no one will wash dishes?”

Texas’ political leaders know this, Hammond said, but they don’t want to publicly acknowledge it.

Former manager of El Cajon company pleads guilty to hiring unauthorized workers, gets no jail time​

John Washburn, the former general manager of San Diego Powder & Protective Coatings, was sentenced to one year of unsupervised release but will do no jail time as part of a plea agreement, according to court records.

The sentencing comes after armed federal agents raided the El Cajon business in March, a decision that Washburn’s attorney said had no purpose other than to “terrorize the community.”

[His attorney] Griffin criticized the decision by federal authorities to pursue charges against Washburn, and said the federal authorities used an unnecessary amount of resources to investigate the case, and then raid the El Cajon business.

Court documents indicate that the company, San Diego Powder & Protective Coatings, often worked with military agencies as a subcontractor, including at the time of the raid in March.

According to the complaint, three workers believed to be undocumented were also living at the company building, where a conference room had been converted into living quarters with cots, a television, small refrigerator, microwave and rack of clothes.
