Biden claims stepping down was his own decision?

I read the summary of September 26 interview where Biden said stepping down was his own decision and he wasn't forced to do it. Yet, in that same interview, he also said he was confident he could beat Trump. But these two statements seem to contradict each other. If pressure within the party is not an issue AND he didn't have his own self-doubts either, then what WAS the reason of stepping down? I mean, if he were to say he was confident he could beat Trump but others pressured him to step down, I would understand. If he says other people's pressure wasn't an issue but he decided to step down because he didn't think he could beat Trump, I would also understand. But if he says that pressure is not an issue AND he could beat Trump, then it leaves me puzzling why he stepped down? Unfortunately that link doesn't show the full interview just the summary. But does anyone have access to the full interview where perhaps he answers the question I have? Here is the link that I saw: Biden Reflects on Stepping Down and His Legacy: 'I Was Confident I Could Beat Trump'

That is because reality does not always match what a given politician wants the viewers to think.

Remember when Biden said "I will step aside if someone will show me that I cannot beat Trump"?

Now he claims no one showed him that evidence -- and inexplicably (given his stated position) he stepped down anyway.

I know, but one would think that he would try to come up with some story to explain it away. What story did he come up with?

Did the interviewer ask him the same questions we both just asked? What did he respond?

It became his own decision right after Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton sat him down on a metal folding chair in a small room with a floodlight and rubber hoses hanging on the wall.

I missed the allegory.
