  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can someone cite to the Biblical support for the idea that God decides your sex and any other characteristics? I have heard an uncountable number of times that God makes you male/female, gives you your physical challenges, etc. What I've never seen is anyone cite to the Bible to show that. I realize that, specifically to Adam and Eve, it is explicitly stated that he made them male and female, but that was for a specific reason, as I understand it.

So, can someone please point to where that is in the Bible, because I have never seen it and I am honestly curious if it is explicitly stated or if it has just entered the narrative over time.

Please note: I do not intend to discuss or debate homosexuality, transgender or anything along those lines at all.

Also note: for non-Christian readers of this topic, please note the rules only allow 1 non-believer per topic, so please refrain from replying.

Thank you.

It's implicit in verses like Isaiah 44:24: "This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself" and in the more general idea of Providence, e.g. Matthew 10:29: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father."

Hi Cute Tink, here are a few more verses that may be of interest to you:

"You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:13-16

Your hands made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments. Psalm 119:73
You continue:
I realize that, specifically to Adam and Eve, it is explicitly stated that he made them male and female, but that was for a specific reason, as I understand it.

Yes, there was a specific reason, but it wasn't directed to Adam/Eve alone. It was to make it possible for all of us to take part in fulfilling the very first commandment God gave us which was, 'have babies, lots of them'.
"God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth" Genesis 1:27-28a
