how did God preserve his word?

Good Day,

By propagation of the word, it was never just in one place at any given time. there were copies of copies that kept spreading....

In Him,

In short: If the church is a body the Catholics are the long term memory

the Catholics built it a stony protective shell (abbys) that they kept politically insulated through the most brutal periods of history when it's destruction would otherwise have been assured, and God called up scholars to devote their lives to it's translation and copy.

from here the propagation of the word was a component especially as the reformation fractured the church and factionized the nations, but also has lead to translation discrepancies as many of these original books were translated to yet another language, and another and another.

This world can never get rid of it. It's impossible. There will always be a certain few who will have it and carry it.

Joel 2:32 KJV
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

I don't know if this is the direction of your question. But God has preserved his Word in OT and NT through:

  1. Faithful oral tradition where the Word was passed on orally by memory from one person/group to another.
  2. When the Word was copied on papyri and codices, we were dependent on faithful copyists who copied the Scriptures.
  3. We must not overlook the superintendence of the Trinitarian God in this endeavour (as per 2 Peter 2:21; 2 Tim 3:15-16).
  4. Then the original documents were translated into various languages.
So God has preserved his Word by a combination of God's breathing out the Scripture and human beings doing the copying and translating.

Is this where you are going with this question?
