Greetings.

Are there any Christian songs with Biblically wrong lyrics in them?

I just heard a song for the first time - "You Were There" by Avalon - and I happened to be paying attention to the lyrics right at the beginning and I was immediately struck with the thought: That Ain't Right!

The lyrics at the beginning are:

I wonder how it must have felt
When David stood to face Goliath on a hill
I imagine that he shook with all his might
Until You took his hand, and held on tight

Can anyone see what's wrong with that?
First of all, in
1 Samuel 17 (<-link to whole passage of Scripture) there's nothing
that says they fought on a hill but that's not what struck me.

David shook? As in scared? I think not! According to the song, David shook and then the Lord took his hand and that must've made him still or calm enough to conquer Goliath.

No way, José. David walked up to Goliath with NO LESS than 100% confidence that he'd smote Goliath's butt.
The Lord was TOTALLY with David from before he even arrived on the scene (just as He's with us before we even arrived on the scene!) David didn't shake, he basically said, "Come on, bring it on, Dude! You're goin' down!" We should all strive for that kind of confidence in our lives.

I'm not saying that nobody should ever listen to the song or that Satan's involved or anything silly like that... I'm just wondering if there are other songs out there that don't quite follow the Bible even though they are "Christian" songs.

Well I think the first time anyone say Goliath they would have been scared...so the last part of the verse is referring to before he atatcks Goliath...and even if you are confident, you can still be scared. It also may have been in the rhyming scheme they were going for...

How do you know he wasn't on a hill? Were you there? I mean, he could've been on a small hill maybe, or a mole hill.....maybe an ant hill?..............

And I'm sure a song with Christian lyrics would NEVER contain error...because we know that 'Christian' songs are actually written by the hand of God Himself, and not fallible man.

I would soooooo smoke abraham and moses in a game of tetherball. I'm wicked with that thing.

And I've got sweet ninja moves, too.

dude, but i bet john the baptist would be killer awesome. abraham might be too busy having people resting in his bosom to play tetherball, anyway.

john the baptist would probably win with the intimidation factor. but that counts for quite a bit in tetherball.

sacrilege n : blasphemous behavior; the act of depriving something of its sacred character

if anything, i'd say this is highlighting how awesome heaven will be. that doesn't seem blasphemous to me. i mean, we're talking about playing the games in God's glory...

No, no, I don't think you understand the peril you've just put your soul in. There is no fun in heaven. Thats what I've been taught. Just like there should be no dancing on Earth, because it makes the ground weep at my sin of erratic and unproductive movement.

Hi ChrisWins,

David shook? As in scared? I think not! According to the song, David shook and then the Lord took his hand and that must've made him still or calm enough to conquer Goliath.

How would you feel if you came up to face a giant who could break your neck without a thought? Notice the actual wording of the song: firstly I imagine and until You took his hand. David would not have went to face the giant if God never told him that He would fight for David. David said that God of the Israelities would defeat the giant, in other words, it was God's fight (1 Sam 17:45). Since both the Philistines and Israelities camped on different opposing hills, they most likely fought in the bottom or valley. David and Goliath probably started throwing taunts at each other from their camps until they faced each other and then fought.

Nether the less, many songs are just sung to praise God - which is what this great song is doing. Without God, we are nothing. Many songs also have to rhyme and can be poetic too.

God Bless,

Delta One.
