  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

have you tried devotionals?
or study helpers?
there are teen bibles too.

my fav helper:

hee hee
it's a journaling technique called S.O.A.P. It works like this:

“S” Scripture. Select and write a scripture of your daily reading.
”O” Observation. Write a personal observation from the selected scripture.
”A” Application. Write a description of a way to apply this to your life today.
”P” Prayer. Write a little prayer.

it’s just a tool that can help studying. For me, sometimes its 15 minutes and other times an hour. I just follow what the Lord has for me that day and follow the pen. You will find you can go back to these later and learn about your "heart condition." It is simple and amazing.

if you want you can select a section or chapter. then fallow the journal s.o.a.p :)

What version is your bible? Maybe try The Message. It's written a little more 'modernly'. Or maybe pick a story... there's a lot of interesting stories in the Old Testiment. Even if they're stories you already know. (Daniel & the Lion's Den, Samson & Delilah, Jonah & the whale, David & Goliath...) I personally found the story of Jacob very interesting... (Genesis 25 - 50) It's a long story, but you don't have to read it all at once.

Try going to BibleGateway.com and use the "listen" links to hear a chapter read to you. There's good inflection, it's like listening to a story, and it might hold you interest more to hear it that way.

However, do you want to read the Bible, or are you doing it because you feel you are supposed to, or because someone is telling you to? Nothing will hold your interest in reading the Bible if, well, you're not interested in reading the Bible.

First, pray for focus.
Second, think of ways that you can increase your focus. You may want to write down a paraphrase of the passage in your own words, as well as conclusions you can draw from the passage and applications for your own life.
Third, you may benefit from a more structured form of study. I like to go through a book that asks me questions about what I've read and how it applies to my life. I've done several of the books in the Lifechange Series; if you don't choose this specific version, there are many others.
Fourth, you may be reading the wrong things. Not wrong, exactly; the entire Bible is useful and profitable for us. But if you're struggling through, say, Ezekiel, you may want to read in the Gospels or one of Paul's Epistles for a little while instead or in addition to your regular reading.

God bless, hon!

All of this sounds like wonderful spirit filled advise. The only thing that I would add is that when I was sixteen I had trouble reading the Bible too. Pray for guidance and focus and it will come, and remember this takes time. I was probably 18 before I really began reading the Bible and recieving from it what God had for me.

2 Timothy 3:16,17 " All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Also remember that if you are interesting in something particular...the Bible has it. Romance- Ruth, Song of Songs. War Stories- Joshua, or basically most of the Old Testament. Drama- the Gospels and Acts. Fantasy- Revalation. Theology- Paul's Epistles. History- The Old Testament and the Gospels. The list goes on but the point is that the Bible contains reading in just about any genre you can think of.

Back to my other point about not reading much until I was older. I didn't even read for school until High School and then I got interested in miltary history and couldn't stop reading. If I had understood that I could have read that sort of thing in the Bible I would have read it sooner. Now I'm just hooked on the Bible and other theological writings, my folks think it's ironic.

NOTE: When I said that Revelation was like fantasy I don't meen that it is fictional. It is simply about things we have not seen or experienced and things yet to come.

Don't give up and don't get discouraged. The Bible is the word of God and it will speak to you. Godspeed!

MY DEAR SISTER IN CHRIST,

i don't believe that you would get "bored" reading a love letter from a special guy in your life!;) You need to read the Bible in the same way and in the same frame of mind. Hopefully, Jesus is THE SPECIAL GUY in your life and, as the Bible is in fact God's love letter to His children, try reading it as such.
There are many good "modern" Bible translations mentioned in the Posts above. Check them out at the Christian Book Store and find one that appeals to you.
Set yourself a specific time for Scripture reading--say 20 minutes per day.
Start out reading the Gospels, Matthew-John, and Acts. These should hold your interest until you get used to Scripture reading.
Pray before you start reading that God will keep you awake and focused, and keep your mind open to receive His words for YOU.
Perhaps drinking a cup of coffee or tea before beginning your reading would be helpful to keep you alert.
MAY YOU BE BLESSED!

MUCH LOVE THROUGH THE LOVE OF THE GOD OF LOVE,
ephraim

I go to the library and borrow the bible on tape, then play it as I'm falling asleep. It gives such a different flow of continuity that sometimes I don't even recognize things I've read several times before.

They're on CD too--the Dollar Tree is selling them book by book. You can find some on CD with maps and pictures at computer and book stores.

The promise books help me too (another dollar store plug, I should just open one), by isolating verses that I would probably underline myself.

Try reading things out loud when you're alone. Walk around the room and read to yourself, praying into the verses as you speak. The movement really makes it feel a part of you, a united expression.

Oh yeah, I use studylight all the time too--that way I'm digging in for research on things I'm curious about, rather than just reading static text.

I get bored sometimes, too, and I end up reading one part over and over to get it to sink in. ^_^

One thing that's helped me is the kind of Bible that's written in the modern-day way of speaking. It's done a world of good for my understanding! I'd advise making an investment in one. I bought mine for about $7, and it's small enough to put in... well... maybe not your pocket, but it's pretty small so it's portable. ^.^

I find bible reading hard too, especially daily bible reading. I find the only way I really get into bible reading is when I come across a topic that interest me (for example: baptism), I then carry out my own investigation of what the bibles says. Searching through different chapters and books, with the help of the Holy Spirit I formulate a view of what I believe the bible says about this topic.

Basically I'm not just reading for the sake of reading, I'm reading because I actually want to increase my own knowledge and find out what God says on any particular topic.

It work for me anyway, and it helps me keep my eyes on Gods Word.

I don't really read too much either, but what gets me into the Bible is knowing how life-giving it can be and how much I need what God teaches through it.

You can also pray to have a desire to read it and stick to it. I've had to do that a number of times.
