I read the Bible long ago and I want to read it again to refresh my memory. So I looked into Bible versions today and the one that impresses me the most is the Holman Christian Standard Bible. It seems both readable and based on real scholarship. I am posting this here to see if anyone has a differing opinion before I go ahead and buy it.

I did my research by comparing various passages in different Bibles. I found particularly interesting the differences in 1 Corinthians 7:36:

1 Corinthians 7:36 - Passage[bless and do not curse]Lookup - Holman Christian Standard Bible - BibleGateway.com

The extreme differences in the versions of this passage are incredible.

WARNING!
"And that servant ,which knew his Lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to His will, shall be beaten with many stripes; But he that knew not,and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For whomsoever much is given,of him shall be much required..." Luke 12:47-48
As Christ taught in the previous two verses, any person that is familiar with the things of God is held more responsible than one who did the same things, but didn't know the truth. It is,therefore, a dangerous thing for you to read the Word of God with no desire or plan to obey. It would be better if you didn't know in the long (eternal) run.
And,anyway, the Bible is a spiritual Book, requiring the Holy Spirit in your heart in order to understand it.
"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God,for they are foolishness unto him;neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." I Corinthians 2:14

Dear Atheist friend, I think I would just forget reading the Bible if you are not going to become a Christian. Read JRR Tolkien or L.Ron Hubbard or something. You'll be better off a thousand years from now.

This verse has to do with giving one's virgin daughter in marriage...or not.
I'd go with the version that infers that meaning.

Let me warn you now that this question is hotly debated by Christians, and you will get a lot of different answers to your question. It is better to read the "wrong" Bible than no Bible at all, so pick the one you like and start reading. Just don't spend a fortune on your first Bible.

("wrong" is in quotes because no matter which one you pick, someone will tell you it's the "wrong" translation and give you 7 million reasons why)

I don't know anything about the Holman bible, but two good, modern, readable versions based on scholarship are the NIV and ESV.

I agree that the first Bible you buy should not cost a fortune and be one you are comfortable reading. Some people do not do well with the style of the KJV, some like LOTS of footnotes, some can only initially understand the more modern translations/paraphrases and some of us like to sample a variety.

Find the one you are willing to read and try to understand.

Go for the Orthodox Study Bible. It isn't perfect, being based off of the New King James, but it is one of few English translations which will have all the books of the Bible which the early Christians used when the Bible was first compiled (including books which the Jews took out after Christ's resurrection )
