  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think the most obvious way of reading the Bible is to ask how it applies to your life. The thing is, a lot of the Bible doesn't have outright moral applications to life. The epistles are pretty good at that, but much of the OT isn't so much. That is, it won't blatantly tell you, "This is the moral of the story, and here is how it applies to life."

I like to ask questions more like, "What does this story teach us about God's character? About humans? Life?" you can gain a lot of general knowledge and wisdom from reading the Bible, and gain a more solid understanding about humanity and God.

Sometimes I don't even ask questions. I just read, and I don't always learn something obvious, but because I continue to read and read and read I develop a better understanding of the Bible's contents and, of course, life. I learn through osmosis, I guess. You don't need to have an epiphany every time you read in order for reading to be worth it.

Everything you wrote is exactly what I would have typed. I am the exact same way. Some times I will be reading and a lot of it will really hit home and I will understand and be able to take a lot away from it. The Acts is a very good example for me on this. The OT I am still working on. The more I read though, I am having a better understanding of the message.

Hi hope your reading and studying the Bible is getting better.

My first principle was daily discipline. There are wonderful Bible through the year programs but the best IMO is the Mcheyne reading plan. It takes you through the OT once and NT and Psalms twice in a year. Link below is one site you can use.

thehttp://bibleplan.org/plans/mcheyne/

A wonderful way to keep track is with the YouVersion Bible App:

https://www.bible.com/

At the above site you can download to any device and your computer. Or all of them! It's free to sign up and you can select over 20 English language Bible versions. Many foreign language versions as well.

One of the options is to start a Bible plan. As I mentioned the Mccheyne is my favorite.

Nothing beats the careful, and regular reading of God's Word, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide one into all truth (John 16.13)!

There are some Bibles that have an in depth study along the pages. Those are great for any questions you have and learn about the book itself and who wrote it, and the history behind it. My Bible does exactly that and I absolutely love it. As for a specific Bible reading, I use a 52 week Bible reading plan. It's really the only one I stick to, as I don't like to read from the first book to the very last. I like to mix it up, and my reading plan fulfills that need quite nicely.

A good Bible reading plan can helpfully expose to the consistent reader a whole panorama of revelation and a good balance of reading in both Old and New Testaments. (Sometimes we can restrict our reading to certain areas of the Bible only.)

I think a one sentence summary of Bible books can also be very useful.

Prayerful Bible reading is of the very essence of the Christian life.

I agree. I always pray before my Bible reading, and then after to thank God for His Word. I am trying to stop and pray in between Scripture that pops out to me, so I can acknowledge it and praise God.

And this sort of healthy habit in the Word with prayer is building a fine foundation for future years, as the Lord spares us. Ever since we have been married, my wife and I have tried to read the Scriptures daily with prayer and it gets so that we can't do without it, by God's grace.

You're right about the need for self-discipline in consistent Bible reading.

Yes, the M'Cheyne plan is widely used.

LizzyMae:

Do you happen to remember if your Bible reading plan has a name? like its editor or publisher?

Sounds like it's very effective for you.

When I was a teen a nice church lady got me started on the published Daily Walk booklets which took you through the Bible in a year. They stopped publishing a few years later when a lot of read the Bible in a year Bibles came out.

I also have a good buddy on another site who uses the Navigators site:

Thanks. I think that the main thing about a Bible reading plan is not that one of them is uniquely preferable, but rather it's the fact that it is used to read diligently through the Word over a long period. It's the long term blessing of reading God's revelation in its fullness that is really valuable.

I highly recommend Joyce Meyer's Enjoying Everyday Life Bible. It's full of insight and notes from herself throughout the whole book that helps guide you and helps you understand what you're reading. It makes it really fun. I also suggest picking up one of her many daily devotionals so you have a fresh thought for each day of the year, with notes and scripture that you can refer back to in your Bible. I couldn't recommend her books enough!
