  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a great thread! :)

I mostly use a big thick parallel Bible with 4 versions in columns - KJV,AMP,NAS,NIV though I mostly read NIV and AMP, occasionally looking at the other two if I notice something a little different. The problem with this when you open it, the left page has the NIV and AMP, the right has NAS and NIV. I'm so used to reading through the NIV which is always on the right side of the book that when I read a normal book, I forget that it continues on the back, left hand side of the page :D (hope someone understands that!!!)

When I want to get into a study, and check the Hebrew or Greek, or search by Strongs, I use the "Online Bible" (you don't have to be online to use it though). It's free and has many Bible versions (some though you have to pay the copyright for - like NIV, though it's a nominal fee), commentaries, Strongs etc etc. It's a great tool.

I want to get an ESV (English Standard Version), but I am now going to order one of those chronological versions - that sounds very interesting :)

I use Biblegateway.com for this. It will pull up several versions at a time so that you can compare them which really rocks when you have serious questions. :)

Oh! Yesterday I tried to post in here, but the forum was buggy. Let's try this again. :)

Hello Macrina and everyone.

I'd like to get one of those parralel Bibles that has 4 versions. But at the moment it's not in my budget. So it was a great day when I discovered Bible Gateway. Now I just plug in the verses I want from the versions I want and copy/paste them into a document to compare. Works for me! :D I generally use the NIV, but sometimes it helps to see it in a different translation to get a greater meaning. I am glad there are different versions and sometimes when I read a verse in a different one it's suddenly like a light goes on and I see whatever the verse or passage is about in a new way. :)

I've used BibleGateway.com a lot in the last few months.
I think a print parallel Bible would be a great blessing though! I would love one of those!

Oh, yeah, different translations can be so helpful! Anyone who's studied a foreign language knows that there are nuances that are hard to translate from one language to another, so it's helpful to see how different translators have interpreted phrases -- maybe one will be easier to grasp than another.

I can't wait for my wide margin Bible to arrive! I decided I wanted one main hardcopy Bible where I could put in my notes from other study Bibles, commentaries, etc. -- sort of a do-it-yourself study Bible with the stuff I think is the most important. I'm stoked! [/nerd moment]

Criada,

The online Bible also comes on the Mac, and you can download the main program and some of the Bible translations, notes etc from here : http://www.online-bible.com/maconlinebible.html

For other versions, you have to purchase it, but it's not so very expensive - especially with current exchange rates! More info on the PC version at the UK site (http://www.onlinebible.co.uk/) so you can get an idea of what's available.

A "second" for online Bible for Mac. I really need to get cracking on my project to get Chrysostom's commentaries into verse note format.

I'm going to read my current (parallel) Bible in chronological order... no real need to get just a separate chronological Bible, is there? Just print out the reading order here.
That's great! :) Thanks for posting that link.

^That is so funny, I have done the same thing. I have the parallel KJV and NIV. I have picked up my husbands Bible and read a page then went to the other side, And was like wait, what:doh:.

I have several Bibles, some are family heirlooms, some I use for study.

To study the readings that will be presented in church on Sunday, I read the New American Bible (same version that will be read in church). If I'm doing self-study, I go with the RSV:CE (Catholic Edition) and NASB. I use the online version of Strong's Concordance. I have an old Jerusalem Bible that I pull out from time to time to read the Psalms, as well as a KJV for the same purpose. I also have an old Douay Rheims which was my grandparents Bible, given to them when they were married.

I also like the following site: http://bible.crosswalk.com

I use macSword for all my online stuff, it's got a lot of extras I don't use (commentaries, lexicons, etc)~it's the same as esword, just for mac.

I'm buried in versions but usually it's the KJV Scofield I carry around, which is odd since I'm not dispensational, and sorta prefer the NKJV (even bought one in Thompson-Chain reference), but all my notes are in that old Scofield (turns 20 this Christmas:clap:), and I can find anything in there, so tattered as it is, it's what I use the most when it comes to paper.

MrsJim uses amplified~that one's ok too (a little wordy, but then you know how girls are:p )

The Bible I use the most is my Holman Illustrated Study Bible (HCSB). It's a lovely edition with good study aids, but the main reason I bought it is the translation, which strikes the best balance of readability, flow and accuracy I've seen.

BibleGateway.com is my favorite online source for searches and different translations.

I use my hearty NIV for before bed reading cause I know I'll wake up with my face plastered to it, or perhaps on the floor with my cat chewing on it. My Date's KJV study/reference Bible is for serious study and it's really great. Some dude spent his entire life compiling it. I'm really enjoying this software called "E-sword" cause it's alot like the software people here have been talking about but it's free downloadable. It's got Greek and Hebrew translations, four different Bible versions (you can download more). You can write study notes beside whatever book your studying which you can expand and work on for Bible school or whatever your doing. Good fun!

EDIT: BibleGateway.com is my favorite online source for searches and different translations. <- Yep, great resource!
