  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,

I just received my first Bible and I was wondering if the HCSB is good start for learning the Lord's word? Thank you!

****************************************************************************************************
EDITED 9/24/2014:

I have received so many suggestions and I thank everyone for them. However, I have came to realize that everyone has a different opinion on which translation is the best for studying. I have decided that the HCSB is the best translation for me. I am just trying to learn the word of God. I am not a scholar in other words, I am overwhelmed with the suggestions, but I am grateful everyone took the time to post.. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and God Bless,

Ashley.

The HCSB is a very good translation. For a beginner you can also read the New Living Translation. If you come across confusing portions of scripture in the HCSB you can compare them with the NLT to gain more understanding. If you go to Biblegateway.com you can compare multiple translations.

Actually, the Revised English Bible (REB), would be a very much better choice. Not available for free:

You could do a lot worse than the HCSB, so I think it's not a bad choice. Don't become too reliant upon one translation though since they all are translations. The HCSB does contain a few quirky readings not found in more traditional translations than are revisions of older translations. You may want to compare at times your HCSB with the ESV and NASB which are 2 very solid reliable translations.

Thanks Abysmul!

Take your time and explore that web page, it is a FANTASTIC resource. One of the great things, is that you can look up a passage/verse/chapter in the bible and do side by side comparisons of MULTIPLE translations. Not only is this great for study, but you can also use it to help find a translation that you are comfortable reading.

For example, look up a chapter and compare a King James translation with a New American Standard, and the English Standard Version!

:)

And you are most welcome!!

I would just like to add that the most important thing for new babes in Christ is when you are going to read the Bible, PRAY! PRAY, PRAY, PRAY....that the Spirit of God will open your mind and heart...and at first just read it, and do not nit pick words and phrases comparing scripture to worldly things or judging them by worldly philosophies...just drink the milk before you try to digest the meat.

Secondly, find some Bible believing churches in your area and sit under their preaching...faith comes by HEARING...as Paul says in Romans 10:14 "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"

Finally, if you have questions ask in forums like this....you may get a number of answers but that is a good thing....it is good to get perspective...and as time passses and you mature some (in the Spirit) the LORD will speak to you through the word most clearly...

In His love

I'm new at really reading the Bible. I chose the HCSB Study Bible send I read John several times first. NLT was also helpful, although I didn't use it much. HCSB explains certain phrases like "bending the bow".

Hi ladybythelake! I am really starting to like the HCSB more and more that I am using it the more I really love it! I also use KJV and NIV (two other translations I use) to cross-reference it with the HCSB. I really like the footnotes at the bottom of each page. I usually look at them when I need a bit further explanation!

Thanks Paul! I really appreciate your input! You are right! I am going to read the whole Bible first (which should take me about a year) before I start heavy scripture study! :)

Hi ashley,

I also would encourage prayer before reading. It can be a reasonably simple and quick prayer just asking your Father to give you understanding, through His Spirit, of all that you are about to read. I would add that I am encouraging this practice even in your first read over. I believe it is important anytime we are reading for both general reading and studious reading.

Anyway, I just wanted to add my encouragement to this practice as I believe it is very important to ask God for this. James wrote to us, 'If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.' I believe that anytime we are reading the Scriptures, beyond just looking up a phrase or something minor of that nature, our goal is to gain wisdom.

I might also point out that there are a number of bible reading plans, if you're disciplined to follow such things, available on line. Here are a few:

Daily Bible Reading Plans ? Read the Bible in a Year!

God bless you.

Ted,

You are right! I am reading these scriptures to gain wisdom and understanding. Just as I want to grow closer to God. Thank you for pointing this out. I am currently following a bible reading plan from Faithlife. I am on the Luke 1 month plan. Going decent so far.

Hi ashley,

Good for you! God will bless you for He has promised that He will be found by those who diligently search for Him. You will find that the new covenant writings are a bit easier to read and understand overall.

Just for something to keep in the back of your mind as you read, I'd like to give you what He has revealed to me in a short form. As you read and understand and gain wisdom you will be able to agree or disagree that what I understand from the Scriptures is correct. Don't waste a lot of time on what I'm going to write, but as I say, just something to keep in the back of your mind as you read.

God created this realm.

We live in a created realm. It consists of stars and planets and asteroids and comets and other bits and pieces of 'space' stuff. It also includes the earth which then includes the plants and creatures who have in them a form of life. Plants and animals both literally 'breathe' as they exist. Plants not so noticeable, but animals much like us. God created it all. All of it! He created it all so that man, His ultimate goal in creating this realm, could live.

If you'd like to take a minute, I'd ask you to read Genesis 1 chapter 1. Only that much. Then turn in your copy of the Scriptures and read Revelation 21 chapter 3. This describe the overarching plan of God. That He created this realm and that the purpose of His creating was that one day, for those who love Him, we will live with Him and He will be our God and we will be His people.

All that is written between these two claims of God is His working within this realm to bring about His final and ultimate goal in creating this realm. That one day, God is going to end this existence as we know it. He is going to judge all men and take those who love Him to be with Him.

He called Abram.

Through Abram God set in motion a plan to reveal Himself to created mankind. He raised up from this single solitary man an entire nation of people to do His bidding upon the earth. God used this nation as His spokespersons on the earth. He also used this nation to bring about the nuts and bolts of our only way of salvation. A righteous man had to die!

Jesus comes.

After God used His people to record all that God wanted to be written that we might understand all that was going on. He sent His Son into the world to be that righteous man. However, while he was here Jesus proved himself to mankind so that there should be no confusion as to who he is and what he was doing for us. He gave us, straight from God himself, another testimony of God.

The final writings.

The remainder of the new covenant writings explain how God's message has been carried throughout the known world and also gives us some practical answers to the 'how now shall we live' question. They also clearly give testimony that God knows the beginning from the end as many of them also give prophetic messages to us about how the world is going to become more and more wicked until we get to that passage of Revelation 21 chapter 3 and then ends by giving us each fair warnings and encouragements.

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted
