  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Arrogance of following the Bible's promises, you mean? Seriously, go read your Bible if you don't think we can talk to God and have the Spirit...
Do you actually read what I say, or do you just read what you want to read? (Pretty much the latter, as that's the way fundamentalists read the Bible: they find what they think they'll find rather than what's actually there.)

I certainly wasn't implying that the Spirit can't speak now - nor that the Spirit can't speak to you - in fact, I think the Spirit is speaking now. Through feminism, the green movement, the anti-war movement etc...

Personally, I've never studied this topic. But someone complained the bible isn't trustworthy because of contradictions. I'm sure there are those better able to tackle these questions them myself. Here they are:
Many of these so called "contradictions" are aleviated by scribal error, like the addition of a "quill" stroke making 4000 to 40,000, and interpretive method. For instance anthropomorphisms . . . does God have wings? No . . . but the concept of wings helps to explain for us in human terms (anthropomorphisms) the feeling/concept meant to be conveyed.

Others are doctrinal understandings . . . like Moses seeing God . . . orthodoxy believes that Moses saw Christ not the Father where one text refers to the father (no one has ever seen God) and the other refers to Christ the Son.
Also the sovereignty of God . . . God is attributed with the action of Satan because Satan is not completely autonomous. God does not "tempt" but He allows temptation.

Feminism??? What is the Spirit of Christ saying through feminism?

Anti-war? The Green... oh well, I suppose you think man, can come up with the solution? Look at history, it will give you a glimpse into the future... without the direct intervention of God, this planet is nothing but a memory... a bad memory at that.

Did God work through the Allies to defeat Hitler? If so, how can anyone be anti-war.

I can't think of any current war that is in the least bit moral.

I don't think God works that way. God isn't a chess-player.
War is simply politics that require greater amounts of force than merely rhetoric. So you are safe in saying all politics isn't in the least bit moral.

Anyways… I have some problems with a book that has gone through the dark ages too – that is why I rely on a modern day prophet and on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to know truth.

In science, a conclusion is not made until after observation, experimentation, and discussion… Perhaps religious conclusions should likewise be made…Don’t make conclusions first, then justify it later – first observe, experiment… then make a conclusion. Then change the conclusion if you find further light and knowledge… have an open mind.. just a thought J

Who is this modern day prophet?

I got my answer... anyone surprised?

President Gordon B. Hinckley seemed to dodge and dissemble in an August 4, 1997 Time cover story when veteran religion writer Richard N. Ostling asked him about the distinctive Mormon teaching that humans can become gods, and that God the Father was once a man

What do you believe is Smith's most meaningful contribution, not only to the church but also to the world?
His greatest contribution I think is defining the nature of deity. He saw the Father and the Son. He spoke with them. They were beings of substance. They were in form like a man. And they could express themselves and he could speak with them. Such an interpersonal relationship. And such a warm and reassuring thing to know the nature of God.

Which spirit is that? :D

I need some scriptural evidence that feminism, the greens and contemporary anti-war movements are righteous! :)
