  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This states that trees were created before man was created.

Genesis 1:11-12
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:26-27
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Here it states man was created before trees were created.

Genesis 2:4-9
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

This seems like an obvious contradiction to me. How could it not be?

Loopholes: Has anyone given you a satisfactory answer to your original question yet, specifically why this is not a contradiction?

Please reread Genesis one and two and you will realize there is a difference between the face of the whole earth and a special garden God planted eastward in Eden. As it is stated in 2:9 out of the ground God made to grow every tree that is pleasent to the sight and good for food. Something special and different from the rest of the earth. Just as is stated in Revelations 22:2
In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Keep seeking the truth,

Hello loopholes...

I understand that you're not looking for an answer to your original question. You only proposed such a question in an attempt to engage in a pointless but vigorous debate, in which you have no intention of changing opinions. Yet, with my knowledge of this, I will still give you my two cents. I guess you can say I am bored.

I'll begin by asking two questions.

Do you see evidence that these two chapters are written by different authors? I don't. It is very reasonable to assume (given many factors like writting style and use of simular language) that these two chapters were written by the same person.

Is it reasonable to assume that the author of these two chapters would have noticed this supposed contradiction? The difference in these two chapters is beyond obvious, and the auther would have been aware of this difference.

I can see how you can take two different books of the bible which may have two completely different authors (not to mention written at different dates) and try to show a contradiction between such texts, but what we have here is no parallel. Here we have evidence that shows that this supposed contradiction was made by the same person, in the same book, being written at the same time. A person who would have noticed he had made a contradiction.

So here is my last question:

Why would the author leave a huge, obvious, and debilitating contradiction in the middle of his work? He wouldn't. The author obviously didn't think this was a contradiction. And since it is his work, the author is in a superior and authoritive position to say what is meant here. Which leads me to believe that it is very logical that one of the many answers you recieved may, in fact, be correct. Either way...the conclusion here is that there is no contradiction and the author of Genesis agrees.
