i disagree fallengeration your trying to turn it in to your own view by using the bible thats what amaze's me about some of these so called christians. That isn't true read Act chapter 2 were they all were in one accord speaking in tounges so there it is don't try to control the spirit of God and try to say what it can do or not stop trying to control God's spirit for your convenace your leading people in false teaching. So stop twisting the bible into your own view its really degrading the word of God!
In Acts 2 they were speaking in tongues to witness to others (read verses 5-12). Their gift of tongues was for a greater purpose--for the Great Commission (to bring other's into the body). I attended seminary and very thoroughly examined a lot of sources about tongues because I have been curious about the "self-edifying" aspect of it. I do NOT doubt the power of tongues. Just when I examined the topic, I found that it was always done to be a witness to God. Tongues is amazing. Truly it is. I don't disagree. God's Holy Spirit is powerful. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit primarily to Spread the gospel and witness to Him. As Paul says, we should be more concerned with prophecy because if you look at the Bible as a whole, it is always always always about a body of people, not us. The Spiritual Gifts were even said to be for the Body as well as to be a testimony to Him. So you speak tongues in your private worship? Go for it. Just, as Paul says, be careful who hears you. (1Cor 14: If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand[
e] say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.)
Also,
1 Corinthians 14 says:
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[
g] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand[
h]comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"
As believers, we are supposed to be MORE concerned with others, and less about ourselves ("Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbor")
