Better Place launches 1st Israeli battery-switching station

Better Place launches 1st Israeli battery-switching station
By SHARON UDASIN

Infrastructures Minister Landau recites 'Shehecheyanu' blessing, calling it a first step toward weaning the country from enemy resources.

Sitting in the back seat of a Renault Fluence Z.E. car during the five-minute battery exchange process, one hears only silence as the engine restarts.

Better Place launched its first battery-swapping station in Israel on Wednesday morning in Kiryat Ekron, next to Rehovot.

The station is the first of approximately 40 stations to operate around the country in the near term, nine of which have already been completed.

The company has also erected over 1,000 functional charging spots for the cars and thousands more will be put in place by the end of the year, according to Moshe Kaplinsky, CEO of Better Place Israel.

"The solution is here; it is ready for national deployment. It is here, it is working and it is available," Kaplinsky told a news conference.

"We promise that by the end of the year we will have full national deployment that will enable each and every one of us to drive."

Tal Agassi, head of solution development and operation at Better Place, reconfirmed the readiness, adding, "We are happy to be able to implement this solution for the first time here in Israel… When we see that it is successful in Israel, we are going to replicate it in other places around the world."

Heading into the exchange station, the driver pulled one of the vehicles up to motorized tracks, as in a car wash, and put the car in neutral. The rest of the five-minute process is automated.

While charging the battery takes about six hours and provides 185 km. of travel, the switch can be done on the run, during lengthy car trips, Oved Ladizinsky, said.

The computerized system on the car's dashboard helps the driver figure out when it's time to charge the car and when it's time to switch a battery.

"Big Brother knows," Ladizinsky said, laughing.

Back at the press conference, Kaplinsky explained that Better Place already has signed agreements with 400 parking lot owners to build charging stations on their land, and 200 are already standing.

For customer convenience, charging can also be done overnight, at home, but homeowners or building committees would have to install special charging sockets; charging from home outlets will not be permitted.

"The charge will make me start every day with a full battery. The fuel station is at my home," Agassi said.

By the end of the year, coverage will be extensive, from the northern to southern tip of the country – "the major thoroughfares throughout Israel will be covered by our system," Kaplinsky said.

Meanwhile, Kaplinsky assured that the system "fulfills all the environmental and ecological standards," and has been undergoing safety tests. Customer service will be available to drivers 24/7.

"This vision three years ago was nothing but a vision," said Shai Agassi, CEO of Better Place. "Now it's real.

"The beauty of it is that nobody will see it, nobody will feel it – you will just drive your car," he added. "The driver will say it's a car, what's the big deal? If that's what the driver says then we've succeeded."

Better Place's partners at Renault were equally enthused about Wednesday's launch.

"Renault is confident that this strategy will bring modernity back to the car industry and pave the way for cleaner, greener, quieter car industry," said Katsumi Nakamura, executive vice president and leader of Renault's Asia-Africa management committee, who had flown in from Japan.

Better Place already has systems under development in Copenhagen and Tokyo, and has plans to expand to California, Hawaii and Australia, according to Shai Agassi.

"This system is going to be copy-pasted all over the world," he said.

Agassi said that Better Place will start selling the Renault Fluence Z.E. cars to customers this year, and they will be delivered by the end of the year. Sales have already begun in Denmark.

About 10,000 people signed an "interested" list for the cars in Israel, he added.

"We expect demand to most likely outstrip supply by a very high factor in the first 12 months," Agassi said. "As far as demand and supply, we will work together with our partners at Renault."

Renault is capable of manufacturing 40,000 or 400,000 cars, whatever is needed, according to Agassi. The prices of the cars in Israel will be made available in a few weeks, but in the meantime, Agassi stressed that electric cars would be a money-saver for the country.

"The entire cost of this infrastructure is equal to one week of gas usage in Israel," he said.

Nakamura agreed that electric cars would reduce costs. He stressed that the Renault vehicles will be sold at an "affordable price," calling the car "a mass-market vehicle" that will "achieve a significant breakthrough in CO2 emissions."

One other motivation – besides environmental and financial sustainability – for a transition to electric cars noted by the speakers was the need to cut Israel's dependency on its enemies' resources.

"We are financing terrorism, we are financing the radical parts of Islam that are becoming stronger and stronger," said National Infrastructures Minister Uzi Landau in his address. "We finance people who are against our culture of freedom.

"When we are bewitched by the car and the fuel we become addicted to the people who manufacture them," he continued.

Landau praised Better Place for finding a viable solution to this problem, for "inaugurating a rehabilitation facility, so to speak, from fuel" dependency.

Landau concluded his address with the "Shehecheyanu" blessing in honor of the event, adding, "On this very august occasion we are inaugurating a plant that is Israeli-based. When people are going to mention the name Shai Agassi in the world, it is a name that is made in Israel.

When people are going to mention Better Place, it is a name made in Israel."

about Better Place..

..already they got $700 million investment and sold 70,000 Better Place electric cars. Deutsche Bank analysts issued a glowing report stating that the company's approach could be a "paradigm shift" that causes "massive disruption" to the auto industry, and which has "the potential to eliminate the gasoline engine altogether."

1) Price: Better Place will sell their electric cars (Renault Fluence Z.E.) at least $5,000 less than the average price of gasoline cars that are sold in the US. Also as batteries improve in range and get cheaper this will result with Better Place selling brand new electric cars cheaper and cheaper over time to reach the prices of used cars.

2) Range: Better Place electric cars will have an unlimited driving range where Battery Switch Stations are deployed. The battery swap itself of a 100 mile battery done by a robot takes only 59.1 seconds and the driver stays in the car during the swap.
YouTube - Better Place demonstrates battery swapping in Yokohama
(old video, now it's faster)
Better Place has battery station installation teams that can install one battery switch station in just 2 days, one every 25 miles in every route. Battery Switch Stations can serve any kind of battery swappable cars, and a Battery Switch Stations with only 15 batteries has the ability to swap batteries for 2,500 electric cars. A Battery Switch Station operated in Japan for more than 3 months 24/7 for three Tokyo taxis with no problems whatsoever. All of California can be covered with Battery Switch Stations, see the map at:
California progress | Better Place
Also noteworthy is that the Battery Switch Stations use the same technology to swap batteries that the F-16 jet fighter aircraft use to load their bombs.

3) Battery : Better Place customers do not own the battery in the car so they will never have to pay for the battery, battery life, degradation, warranty issues, maintenance, capital cost, quality, and technology or anything related to the battery. All battery costs burden only Better Place.

4) Billing: Better Place customers will only have one monthly bill that will include unlimited access to the Better Place network of public charge spots and battery switch stations, electricity usage, personalized energy management and navigation services via in-car and network software, an inventory of batteries with a guaranteed service level agreement, 24-hour access to customer service and support, and a private charge spot.
This bill will be around what you pay today for gasoline every month.

5) Mass EV charging: The charging grid of Better Place will be computer controlled so that it will not overload the host country's electricity grid with hundreds of thousands of Better Place electric cars charging at the same time.

6) Used Better Place electric cars retain their resale value because they are sold without the battery. With the performance of batteries improving so quickly, how many second-hand users would buy an electric car with last year's battery inside? The second owner/subscriber of a Better Place electric car will receive the latest battery packs from Better Place.

7) Better place will be the first to offer 100% clean true zero emissions electric cars with all the cycle of all electricity production 100% renewable from wind (Denmark) and solar (Israel).

8) With $8 Billion the company Better Place can make the US an oil free country saving the US more than $360 Billion a year and the financial devastation of an oil controlled US economy.
(Oil price shocks and price manipulation by OPEC at 2004-2008 cost the US $1.9 trillion.. In 10 years it will cost the US 7 Trillion!!)
Also the whole Better Place network can be deployed in any country at the cost of 7 days of oil in that country.

Electric cars with a price higher than gasoline cars (Volt, Leaf) ) will only be bought by 1-2% of car drivers worldwide over 10 years. That's the case with the Prius, in 13 years, it captured less than 2% of the worldwide car market even though they are only $4,000 more expensive than gasoline cars. The Renault Fluence Z.E. is a very beautiful car, hopefully Better Place will be selling that one in California. By the end of 2011 Better Place electric cars will be sold with all required infrastructure (including 56 Battery Switch Stations) in place.

All of the following video is amazing to watch..
YouTube - Shai Agassi: A Better Model?
Entire US filled with 10,000 Battery Switch Stations in 3 months 23m:02s..

Again.. Better Place electric cars will be cheaper than gasoline cars so they will FLOOD the auto-market. As a proof of that, Better Place has already sold 70,000 of them in Israel!!. With this exponential rate of sales by 2015 Better Place will be selling 50% of all cars in Israel and by 2020 90% of all cars sold in Israel will be Better Place electric cars. Other automakers will see this rate of sales and will join Better Place as their Battery Switch Stations can serve any kind of battery swappable cars, moreover..

..As the world realizes that Israel in just a few years will reach oil Independence at the cost of 7 days of oil, country after country will sign up with Better Place bringing about the end of the gasoline car and the oil age.

..are all part of the Zionist plan. They have positioned themselves for this. They start fires and then have water and hoses ready for sale.

Zionist plan?

Israel is buying oil from Arab countries..

Arab countries use the money to fund terrorists
to bomb civilians in Israel.

So Israel by buying oil they fund their killers!

Israel terminating oil imports is simply called:

How about the thousands of innocent people Arabs have bombed?

When there is use of force NO ONE is innocent.

Imagine if oil was always a useless substance and the whole world was running from electricity made from solar/wind for over 100 years..

Many wars for oil and terrorists operations would never happen and the world would indeed be a better place to live.

If Better Place electric car infrastructure was in place in all the world even 10 years ago, Better Place would have been bigger than Exxon Mobil and oil would be a useless substance not driving the economy from recession to recession. Key points 1) and 2): Electric cars cheaper than any gasoline car with unlimited driving range.

Just imagine if Better Place went IPO 10 years ago and you invest only $500, after their infrastructure is deployed in all the world their growth would be over 300% how much your $500 investment would worth.

Apple sell ipods and the like..
Better Place sells cars by the tens of thousands.

If they go IPO this year, by 2020 probably there shares will worth 300% IMHP.

This is sorta something I always thought about electric cars. Rather than focusing solely on making the battery last longer or charge more quickly, we should be focusing on a battery standard that's easily replaceable. You can drive into a station, pull up and have your battery/batteries switched out for fully charged ones. Then the station charges the depleted battery.

That's all fine and good charging the batteries, but...with what electricity? Coming from coal-fired power plants that pollute just as badly as the cars? We need to go green on the electricity first.

All electricity of the Better Place infrastructure including batteries, charge spots will not be coming from coal-fired power plants.

7) Better place will be the first to offer 100% truly clean zero emissions electric cars with all the cycle of all electricity production 100% renewable from wind (Denmark) and solar (Israel).

In the ongoing Arab–Israeli conflict both sides are guilty by claiming the same territory is theirs. This Article is about an electric car infrastructure that
if implemented in all countries around the world
is able to bring the end of the oil age and the gasoline car.

Oil will end anyhow with sky high oil prices and crippled economies
around the world OR if Better Place infrastructure is adopted by all,
oil will end as a useless substance with little or no impact on world's
economies.

R.I.P. Oil!!

So who are the wise and prudent countries (Proverbs 27:12)
that are deploying Better Place infrastructure?

Israel, Denmark at the same time
beggining January 2012
and Australia six months later.

When these three countries
successfully deploy Better Place infrastructure
with hundreds of thousands of
Renault Fluence Z.E. Better Place electric cars
in the next couple of years,
you will see North America, European Union,
Japan and other countries jumping in.

Now I'm seeing something odd. Why is this significant just because Israel's doing it? They've been doing this in the Bay Area California for quite some time. Cities all over the U.S., these charge stations are popping up. And the U.S. is not exactly the frontrunner when it comes to green transit.

Another thing I find odd is the state of perpetual war Israel has put themselves in. Why even care? When you want to blow up something you don't really care about the environment.

The Vietnam war killed only 1.8 million? Ha. Regardless, the death toll from the conflict is irrelevant.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called Obama's high speed rail and electric car goals "the candy of American politics"

Christie Calls Infrastructure Investments “Candy” | Transportation Nation

True..

Electric cars with a price higher than gasoline cars like the Volt and the Leaf will only be bought by 1-2% of car drivers worldwide over 10 years.

That's the case with the Prius, in 13 years, it captured less than 2% of the worldwide car market even though they are only ~$4,000 more expensive than gasoline cars.

Better Place CEO: Biggest obstacle to electric cars is auto industry 'scepticism' | EurActiv

..The (Toyota hybrid) Prius was about €3,000 more expensive than the Corolla. That €3,000 meant that even though it was extremely successful perception-wise, it was less than 2% of the cars sold for the 13 years it was on the market. Only €3,000 more expensive. Why wouldn't it sell more, given that we all want to save the planet?

Make an electric car €3,000 cheaper than a gasoline car, you'll see the exact opposite effect.

****

High speed rail is too expensive..

Around $500 Billion..

The True Cost Of High Speed Rail For The U.S. Is More Than $500 Billion

Barack Obama's vision of a national high speed railway is going to cost over half a trillion dollars, according to an estimate by Randal O'Toole, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute.

$500 Billion..

With $8 Billion the whole Better Place electric car network can be deployed in the US with 10,000 Battery Switch Stations in 3 months.
