Right. To me, that's a form of hypocracy. Some people just listen to indie music cuz it's the cool thing to do, and listening to any mainstream music means you just have bad taste. But by making indie music shallow like that, they are just being what they calim to hate.

I dont know if it was ever labled as "cool" , I have found in my own personal experience that people who listen to more Indie are quite more passionate in regards to music.

Jordan, really... you do not see a difference between someone who enjoys a song for the song (and not which artist plays it) and the person who "likes" a song based on its popularity level?

No. I'm saying the former type does not exist- cannot exist. Generally, that type of person has hidden his biases better, or his biases are by their nature more obscure. But they are still as foundationless as the other person's, because there is no foundation, or if there is one, we can't get at it.
Nadroj, that is just incorrect, and I am proof of that.
I really hate heavy metal. The heaviest I'll ever get is Zeppelin, which says something... as theyre not that heavy in comparison to a lot of others. So I just do not really like metal bands or their music. I also don't like the whole "darkness" theme that a lot of them latch on to. There is a bias right there.
Now the first time I ever heard Dreamtheater, I was blown away. They are just so good they totally destroyed my biases against metal. They are the only metal I ever listen to, but I do listen to them and I love them.
So even though I am biased against their whole genre and whatever else comes along with it, I have managed to like their music just for the sake of their music. So, I am that former type and I do exist!!! :)

And then there are people like me, who likes them because a chord change gives me a little tingly feeling all over. What's the difference?
I am like that too. The difference is that you like the music (the chord change or whatever else) and you couldnt care less who else likes or doesn't like the said band. That is real music appreciation. For the other types, I'd call that "popularity appreciation." :)

And I'm saying that all of it is based on superficials, whether we recognize it or not. My tingly feelings are just as superficial as someone's need to like a band because it's popular/indie/etc.
I disagree 100%. That tingly feeling isn't caused by nothing. There is a reason for it. There is a reason some songs give me goosebumps and that reason has nothing to do with the band's popularity. It is because the songs are GOOD. Thats all I can say about the reason because I dont fully understand it, but we can obviously see evidence that its at work. (LOL this totally sounds like we are debating the existence of God!! ^_^)

hey, here's a suggestion...they are indie now, and they are no longer what people have classified them as....Hanson.....now, i know what you're thinking, "are they still around?" "i haven't heard anything since mmmbop!" "hanson, who's hanson?" etc....well, their music has changed, and after a 4 year struggle, they released their lastest album (Underneath) under their own indie label...even if you didn't like mmmbop (or even if you did) i'm suggesting that you look into their new mature sound!

I think that's a little oversimplified. You had a bias you were aware of, and then you got rid of it. Whether that means you completely eradicated bias or just replaced it with a new one is the question I want to ask, and, in my estimation, it has to be the latter. But that really has to do mostly with what I'll say below...

I am like that too. The difference is that you like the music (the chord change or whatever else) and you couldnt care less who else likes or doesn't like the said band. That is real music appreciation. For the other types, I'd call that "popularity appreciation." :)

No, I like the tingly feeling. I get it from other things, too. But I don't think I like the music itself, but merely the feelings it gives me. Similarly, someone who likes the music because it's popular (or because it's underground) gets those feelings for other reasons, but they still like the feelings and not the music "in itself."

I disagree 100%. That tingly feeling isn't caused by nothing. There is a reason for it. There is a reason some songs give me goosebumps and that reason has nothing to do with the band's popularity. I tend to think you don't understand it because it's not something that exists :) (Yeah, it does sound like a theological discussion ;) ). I've been lookin' a long time, and I've never found anything that's proven itself as good evidence.

The heaviest I can get it Xiu Xiu. Who here likes Xiu Xiu? So great... so over-the-top...

What I've heard I like a lot. "I Luv the Valley OH!" is unnerving, great.
