  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What do you think is the best study bible?
This is certainly a common enough question and you would think that the answer shouldn’t be all that complicated – but! One factor that I probably never come across is with the number of Greek and Hebrew books that are written for particular Bible versions and this ranges from a comprehensive number to nil.

This in my view is an important factor as some versions seem to have little if any technical support behind them so in the end, all you are left with, is the opinions of various translators, or should I say, a single opinion, as they will generally only provide one solution to a text.

This is where the humble NIV has the advantage over many other translations. The NIV has had an Exhaustive Concordance since 1992 where it is also based on the newer and more accurate G/K numbering system. It also comes with a superb Greek and English Interlinear New Testament which in my opinion is second to none. It also comes with a range of other Greek text books which will enable even the novice Bible student to dig deep into the Word.

It depends on how in depth you want to get. New American Standard is the most accurate Bible, but it isn't perfect. To really get the meaning, you must have ways of going back to the Greek and Hebrew.

Take a couple of Examples. In John 3:16, it says for God so loved the world. That is the best translation, but we mostly read it as God loved the world so much. The Greek is clear. It says For God loved the world in this way.

Another example is John 1:1. In the beginning was the word. The Greek word for word is Lexis. The Greek word used is Logos. From it, we get our word logical. Should we translate it In the beginning was the logic? That doesn't get the concept either. It is a very difficult word to translate.

There are many things that pop out when you go back to the original, so it is hard to say what is the best study Bible. There are many good ones, until you get to a point where you need more.

I'm not a study bible kinda guy..Reference bibles are where it's at. ;) Pitt Minion/Cambridge are awesome.
I have a Zondervan KJV study bible, it's ok.
There's always a slant by the author(s) of the study parts.

I agree with the reference bible center column preference.

Seeing that I am a amillennialist and partial preterist at that. I've gotten a low tolerance for this John Nelson Darby and Cyrus I Scofield bizness.

I am thinking of investing in this Preterist study bible (includes a nice article on this book with scripture representing evidence to this view).

I found a amazon.com reviewer that mockingly called it Jerry Falwell's study bible or maybe he is one of its com mentors. As most Christians should know, Jerry Falwell is a notorious Christian Zionist. And the same reviewer, states this study bible's footnotes only presents one exclusive eschatological view throughout... dispensationalism!

I'd rather shoot myself in the head then expose myself to such gloom n doom drivel stuck in the very pages of God's precious word itself!

This is a question that all depends on your theological persuasion. What one person says is best another will say is not good. Personally I think the best option is a reference Bible. Probably the best reference Bible around is the Thompson Chain, it has more references than the standard reference Bibles and also groups them into topics.

Well, no, it isn't.

I think it would be a choice between the NIV and ESV, with the ESV winning. The ESV also comes as a study Bible, which people tell me is good.

The NASB is generally regarded as the most literally accurate Bible, though the NKJV is probably as literal. The ESV is less literal than both.

Don't get the ESV Study Bible unless you're Reformed, otherwise it will disappoint.

Well, no, it isn't. The most literally accurate Bibles are those recent translations striving for literal accuracy, like the ESV.

Of course, if you really want literal accuracy, there is no substitute for the Hebrew and Greek, because all translation involves some interpretation.

The commentary notes of a study Bible are always a starting point rather than an end point in regard to delving further into the text of scripture, I would suggest a single volume commentary if price is an issue, they will generally contain the same information if not more than just a study Bible.

That has the advantage, of course, that you can have whatever translation you want. However, single volume commentaries that I've seen are more of an "introduction to the Bible" than the kind of study notes you'd find in a study Bible.

I'd actually endorse the idea of a study Bible, with commentaries on individual Bible books as the next stage.

You're probably right, I was thinking along the lines of something like Matthew Henry's.

Space saving methods and ease of use have kind of got me using commentaries through logos on my tablet in conjunction with my paper bible, it may be more simplistic to use simply logos on my desktop, but I haven't sat down to actually puzzle my way through it

The RSV with corrections from the two resources mentioned in: Anyone here a fan of the RSV? - page 5 (which are on a sale right now and for another 22⅓ hours) beats the ESV, NASU and NKJV!:

I deplore the Scofield study bible but appraise the ESV study bible. Me wants! Me wants!

Even though a lot of the writers of the notes are of the reformed theology I hear it presents an open end to all theologies, leaving it open to the reader whether e.g. they be pre-mill or amill etc.

And I hear the Holman KJV study bible is one of the most loaded of Study Bibles. One may want to look into that one too. I plan on buying this one but not until I examine it at a local Christian bookstore, to see whether the eschatological notes are far too favourable towards one view unlike what I hear of the ESV study bible.
