  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I own 4 different bibles, and still haven't found a good study bible that is in-depth and full of interesting additional information...

The closest I've got is Joyce Myer's Everyday Bible. Along with a study bible, it could be a good purchase for you Mystic Angel! Check it out next time you are in a Christian book store, remember it isn't a study bible per-se, it's just another brilliant way of getting more out of your everyday word.

I don't have a study Bible. I do have an NIV/KJV parallel Bible, and for study I look at the resources at bible.crosswalk.com. They've got Matthew Henry's and John Gill's commentaries, Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, Greek/Hebrew lexicons, all kinds of good stuff.

Amplified Bible. It has greek/hebrew definitions built into every verse. Let me give you an example. Here is John 3:16 in the King James Bible:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Here is John 3:16 in the Amplified Bible:

"For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life."

It explains the verses a whole lot better than most Bible translations.

I have....

NKJV Study Bible from Thomas Nelson publishers (second edition): has notes for every verse and many articles, maps, timelines, outlines, concordance and a cd rom for your comptuer where you can search for verses and study etc. It has cross referencing notes also and the verse by verse notes are basically commentary alongside. it's very thick and very heavy haha but the best i have found so far.

NIV Life Applications: A recent purchase of mine which has outlines and articles also but fails in comparison to the nkjv study bible in terms of notes for verses, I also find it a bit less in depth in it's articles, but I haven't explored it as much as my nkjv which is my preferred use for study.

I'd like to buy an NASB Macarthur Study Bibles, many pastors and deacons/elders like this bible and they say while it's somewhat expensive that it has great commentary and articles/outlines and cross reference notes. Maybe I'll ask for this as a christmas present...if i can even wait that long haha :p

I also hear the ryrie study bible is also a nice choice. I tend not to stray too far in translations and one day I'd like to learn hebrew so I can read the bible in all it's beauty.

What kind of study Bible do you use? I'm looking for a good translation for serious studying, with lots of references, historical data, footnotes and etc. Thanks!
OK.

A Translation is the actual scripture itself. The translation is how the words of scripture read- how they were translated from the original Greek and Hebrew texts into English :)

For study there is no contest the only translation for serious study is the King James Version. This is because it is the standard. It is the standard for serious study in English. It is was serious studies reference etc. And its often the most accurate. Not always, but its pretty good.

The references, historical data, footnotes etc are all extras that different Bible include and it has nothing to do with the translation. I'm also not sure on a good Bible for this. However, I'm 99.999999% postive that if you want to study seriously pick up a Bible with good cross-referencing and buy commentaries and books that are dedicated to study along with the bible. For the Bible to be a comprehensive look into it it would be so freaking huge that it wouldn't be possible unless someone just made a freaking huge bible. And even then, its easier to, while studying, lay it all out in front of you, not constantly flick to the back of the Bible to look at the notes/info...

So yeah thats just my two cents

I would disagree with Windmill. If you are looking for the notes and everything I would go Macarthur Study Bible, but for the most accurate English translation, it would be the NASB and the ESV. Those would be the most true to the original languages.

I guess I should do research and compare to each other to find the most accurate one, although none is perfect of course, and I will check out the MacArthur Study Bible, it sounds helpful.
