mainstream/secular music aside I think all of us have our favorite singers/groups that are not well known by the majority of people. This thread is for us to list some of our favorite "hidden gem" artists. ;)

I love ambient/electronica/trance music. Enigma and Delerium are probably the two best known "projects" of this genre but other favorites include:

Balligomingo
Conjure One
Sleepthief
Schiller
Jens Gad/Achillea
Lesium
Magna Canta
ES Posthumous
Dagda
Deep Forest
Mysteria
Blue Stone
Mediaeval Baebes
Bond
Amethystium

Celtic music is another genre I love. Loreena Mckennit is my favorite "hidden gem" celtic artist. Some other not so well known artists I enjoy include:

Connie Dover
Kate Price
Secret Garden
Dougie MacLean
Kim Roberteson
Aine Minogue
Lisa Lynne
Maddy Prior
Anne Roos
Bill Douglas

other not so well artists I enjoy:

Kristy Thirsk
Shelley Harland
Kristy Hawkshaw
Mya Saben
Kim Sanders
Jody Quine
Sandra Cretu

I'm seriously into progressive rock, mainly of the more modern variety. More people should listen to the following:

Porcupine Tree
Pure Reason Revolution
Transatlantic
Spock's Beard
Blackfield
Riverside

And then there's the Dunedin Sound:

The Chills
Straitjacket Fits
The Clean
The Verlaines
3Ds
Pop Art Toasters

And I also like various types of metal, mainly of the atmospheric, progressive death, and avantgarde varieties:

Agalloch
Orphaned Land
Alcest
Borknagar
Anathema
Cynic
Arcturus

Wow. This is where all the obscure music came to on the forum. :p Love it!

My fave obscure-ish bands:
-Leaves' Eyes (folk/symphonic metal with a female singer)
-VNV Nation (Industrial/trance mix)
-Finntroll (well known in certain metal circles, these guys play a fusion of Death Metal and Finnish Polka. Goes together like peanut butter and chocolate!)
-Therion (Symphonic metal. Also well known in certain circles.)
-After Forever (Symphonic metal. Their former writer split to form Epica, so their music before and after his leaving may as well be considered two different bands.)
-Nightwish (perhaps best known of all the symphonic metal bands. Recently suffered much drama by kicking their singer out.)

Taken from a similar thread, so not that obscure:

Oceansize (UK progressive rock)
Love (classic rock; see Forever Changes)
Clint Mansell (soundtrack to Requiem for a Dream & The Fountain)
John Frusciante (guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers, he's actually better than the band)
Sparklehorse (indie)
