  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I saw The Descendants; it was ok. It's one of those serious movies; that I think the academy likes but I wouldn't say it was best picture material.
Surprisingly I didn't see the Help or War Horse even though I really wanted to see both; and I read the Help.

I saw The Help... It was good and the actresses who are nominated definitely deserve their nominations (I can't remember if there's more than one nominated for Oscar).
I want to see The Artist. I doubt I'll see any of the others. Its a rare year that I have seen or want to see any of the Best Pic noms.

I haven't seen any of them. I thought of watching Tree of Life on my recent flight to and from home, but Brad Pitt irks me enough that I didn't. The Help is another I wanted to watch, but decided to read the book first (which will happen after I finish the Hunger Games trilogy). Oh, and I wanted to see Hugo, but it was not offered on the planes or in local theaters, which is rather annoying. So, yeah, I have nothing to offer this thread but babble.

I saw War Horse, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and part of Tree of Life. War Horse was a very good epic and I enjoyed very much. Hope it wins. I walked out on Tree of Life and thought it to be a waste of money.

What was so awful about Tree of Life?

From an artistic point of view, maybe the critics saw something in the movie that was Oscar-worthy. What I saw of the movie was too symbolic for me and I understood very little of it. Torturous????

I KNEW the artist would win!!!! I loved that they brought the dog up on stage!

Did anyone else think that all the actresses nominated for best actress were women portraying really deep and amazing roles while the characters for best actor were just so-so?
