Just wondering, how much RAM do you have?

Just wondering, how much RAM do you have?

The last computer is 8GB. The replacement computer is 12 GB.

The last computer has an AMD processor and AMD graphics card made by ATI. The replacement computer has an Intel processor and a NVIDIA graphics card.

The last time I bought the computer I debated over AMD and Intel processor and AMD graphics card and NVIDIA graphics card. I don't know… I guess I will see for myself now which I like better. It just all depends on the set up and specific card etc. etc. etc.

There are a couple upgrades on the replacement computer but I'm also losing a couple things with the replacement computer as well. I'm disappointed to say that HP just doesn't have a great variety of desktops anymore and it was hard to find a replacement computer that matched my old specs.

Branded PC's are all a sad overpriced mess mainly. Always built my own (not everyone can i know) computers so I can get the best bang for my dollar. No matter what path you take just make sure its what you want for you needs - no point buying a machine with an expensive graphics card when all you do is email and web browse.

Well said. :) nice you can build your own. Yes whether one likes a computer or not can depend on what you're using it for. I use my computer for very many things.

Do you mind me asking which of the following processors and cards you prefer? Again, I know this is a rather general question but I'm still interested in your thoughts. Well this question is for anybody who wants to answer it… Please do so. :)

In the past 3 years I've bought a new HP laptop and new Lenovo desktop (both Intel) and they've both worked very well, no problems at all...one was a Win 7 and other Win 8, impressed with both (as I type this from an 8 year old macintosh ;) )

Lol cool! it's good to know you like your HPs and it's interesting to learn about Lenovo. I have no experience with them at all.

I first learned about computer ins and outs years… and years ago… :sorry: on the old Apple computers so I've had a lot of catching up to do in the last five / six years. The technology changes so fast too it's incredible.

...lol don't get me wrong, I have been using computers all this time but I've not been focusing on the technology aspect as thoroughly all this time. :blush1:

I have to say that I really really do like Windows 7 but do not think I will be a fan of windows 8. I was hoping to avoid it altogether and skip right to Windows 9, Threshold. Anyways, will be easier to upgrade this replacement computer from 8 to 9 than my older one from seven to 9. I see that as a blessing. Still, I'm not buying a laptop until windows 9 comes out! ... That's a whole other thread though. :D

I realize this is a very very general question considering each computer has varying specs but I'm interested in knowing people's opinions regarding PC brand name computers. What PC brand name computers do you think are the best? Do you like HP, Dell, Asus... Which company do you think is sticking with good technology and also good customer service?

HP computers are ok but their tech support is generally terrible with a few rare instances. Lots of transfers, long hold times, people who don't speak English clearly, reps who can't deviate from scripts... and that's calling the support line for resellers.

I like Dell computers and their support has generally been pretty good. I've had customer service work with me even though they knew the computer's warranty had expired just because the rep thought the problem was interesting. Since I'm in IT, they will sometimes skip the troubleshooting and just provide replacement parts when I tell them what I've already done.

I'm also a fan of Lenovo. A bit expensive sometimes but their support is pretty good and I dig the southern accents on the few occasions I had to call (their center is located in Georgia). I've been using a Lenovo laptop for the last 4 years and never really had a problem with it

Interesting... Thank you! :)

Yes, HP customer service can be a handful. Truthfully though, I have seen much worse! Now that's a scary thought.

A W8.1 Update 1 computer I have has 9.5GB but I bought it for someone who didn't want any b-day gift plus she quit the friendship during the same phone-call. It's for reading books. Should I sell it?:
8 and 12 is really good. I bet it runs fast.

Intel CPU's (except Celeron range) and Nvidia graphics cards are what I usually employ for my machines

I have a AMD mini-itx APU board with onboard graphics. It was fairly expensive and buggy BIOS so that might be my last AMD purchase. Having said that, it's pretty good on power using approx 25 Watts. It might be reassigned as a new NAS box as it has 6 SATA ports onboard and still has enough graphics power to act as a media server too.

You can build a nice compact mini-itx box for about $350 (minus monitor, keyboard and speakers) - great for the PC DIYer upgrading.

I'd give the tick to Lenovo laptops as best of the bunch. My girls have the E520's about two years old now. However, one had a hard drive die and the other needs a replacement keyboard. Guess overall that isn't too bad with teens using them. So rough cost to keep them going over 2 years is approx. NZ$200.
