Hey Rick,

Is this the same picture that you posted earlier, but cropped? Have you tried cropping the clouds and leaving the town? The town is underexposed, but I liked the image of the sun coming out of the clouds onto the hidden valley town.

I love taking pictures of my sweet girls. I've gotten to the point where I love the pictures I've taken of them better than the professional portraits we've had done. I do realize that most will not find the same joy that I do in photos of my kids ;) but these are some of the one's I'm most proud of. There are some technical problems with each of them, I think, but, oh well. :)

Love, Heather

be careful with your flash there Heather. Try putting a thin white cloth, or some tracing paper over the flash gun to diffuse the light.
There's no flash used in those pictures. It's a trick played by my dilapidated scanner. ;) Especially that last one...wow. But thanks for the tip...though, like I said, I hardly ever use my flash at all...I'm a huge fan of natural light. :)

Sorry, I was thinking about the second one - the light looks quite harsh, which led me to believe it was taken with flash.

I too prefer natural light, you can't beat it.

Have you tried backlighting? shooting into the sun (so the sun is behind the subject). Make sure you expose for the face, otherwise it will be a silhouette. You can throw a little light to lift the shadows under the mouth and nose by holding a white piece of paper up to reflect the sun's rays back into the face.

I love the first one one the left, Nerdy Surfer Rick. It draws the viewer in, has motion from the shoes to the vegetation, and one can even imagine a little story to go with it. Nice contrasting texture between the sand, shoes and vegetation. (By the way, the shot works much better in B&W instead of the color you originally posted.)

The next two don't do anything much for me. Too much dark space in the one, and the other leaves my eye wandering for a point of interest.

The panorama of the surfboard doesn't do anything for me. While you put the board according to the rule of thirds, it just doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe a closer shot with a real wide angle lens could have saved that one.

Here is a shot of my best friend.

...but can I ask you two how you managed to load such big pics? I have to shrink my photos sooo small brfore they will load on here.. about 30KB.
First time I tried, message said I exceeded 2mg limit. Pulled up picture in photoshop and saved a new version at "medium" (7) jpg setting. That worked, but it takes the server here a while to download.
