This is tough because there are a lot of great songs that were released long before they were associated with movies, so I'm not including any of them. As great as they are.

Here's 5 amazing soundtrack songs...no particular order:

Time Warp - Rocky Horror

Somewhere - West Side Story

Day by Day - Godspell

How Deep is Your Love - Saturday Night Fever

Pure Imagination - Willy Wonka

Yes. This is definitely one of the best.

The songs of Aimee Mann in Magnolia, specially "Wise Up".

Bjork's acapella song in Dancer In The Dark. The whole soundtrack is great.

"Porque Te Vas" by Jeanette, in Cria Cuervos. It's the only song Saura uses in the film, and he uses it three times. It fits perfectly.

"The Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, in The Graduate.

"Exit Music (For a Film)" by Radiohead, in Romeo + Juliet.

"New Slang" by The Shins, in Garden State.

The best piece of background music ever is the second music used in the Battle of Endor (Leia is Wounded/The Duel Begins/Overtaking the Bunker/The Dark Side Beckons/The Emperor's Death.) It is excellent throughout, though the latter part of The Dark Side Beckons and the entirity of The Emperor's Death are simply amazing (there are seperate sections to the piece but is actually one continous ten minute long piece of music). They are decent enough pieces of music on their own, but combined with the action of the movie they create one of the few scenes in movies that make me shiver every time (The final duel between Luke and Vader.) In any case this track in particular, I think, makes it clearer why Star Wars is referred to as a Space Opera. All of the music used in the main battle scenes of the original trilogy (by which I mean Battle of Yavin/Hoth and Endor) are pretty good actually, but the Return of the Jedi ones have more developed themes and have more of a serialesque feel if you like that sort of thing (and if you don't I question why you are watching star wars), plus they manage to keep from repeating themselves more than the other two, despite the fact that there's actually three pieces used for the battle of endor (because it was so long) that total to roughly half an hour.
