The only issue with that is Greek word order can sound a bit funny in English!

Oh, yeah! We bought a Greek-English word-study NT recently, and when you read the direct English translation it sound like it was written by Yoda...

I'll write you a bible. It will be considerably shorter, more accurate and much less expensive. I will label it, 'Charles Darwin's theory of evolution'.

That's very interesting. How does your bible explain the origin of life?

Guys, there is no room for debate here. MattyM is just a troll whose total of 12 posts have all been condemning us stupid Christians for all our archaic beliefs. Silly us huh? ;)

I think the great thing this showcases though, is that someone needs to do their homework, as Charles Darwin's theory of evolution isn't actually the one held by evolutionists today. *laughs*

Hi, Matty --
I'm sure you already know there are thousands of other reasons to buy a Bible than to focus on the origin of life. That discussion takes up less that 1/1000th of the book, and the point of those few pages was not science.

If we humans knew all the answers to science, there would be no more learning and no more discussion. Sort of boring.

Welcome here, though. I'm not sure what you're getting out of joining a Christian forum when you're not interested, but hey. You will spice up our lives.

Coffeeandmuffins, did you get one yet? Not pressuring, just curious. We've sort of overwhelmed you with ideas. Like hlaltimus implied, nothing horrible will happen if you get the wrong one.

You might even look through some resale stores to get a cheaper backup version.... consignment, garage sales, dollar stores, library book sales.

Biblegateway was mentioned twice -- I also use studylight.org.
http://www.studylight.org/par/ <--Spanish Parallel Bible online, with all the versions mentioned above -- you can get a better idea.

My favorites are the KJV, NKJV, and the NASB, which are all quite accurate.

I found huge mistakes in the NIV from my Interlinnear Bible. :(
What? Why? Wait... what?

You found mistakes in the NIV? I found mistakes in the KJV... wanna swap? ;)

I'm going to ask my husband if he will buy me (us really) a bible for Mothers Day (I'm pregnant with our first  ) and am wondering which version is the most accurate translation? I once read the New International Version and enjoyed the side notes, I also enjoy the words of the Lord in red, but I never knew if that was an accurate version or not.

Also, it'd have to be a version available in spanish (we live in a spanish speaking country)!

Thank you!

New King James Version, in my opinion. Easy to read but maintains the Scriptures. ;)

I haven't read what's been written so far. But I will say that the NASB is fairly accurate. But I'll also say that NO English translation speaks with complete accuracy to the Greek and Hebrew.
Thus, I would recommend something such as E-Sword. It's free, and you get many translations. Easy to use. You can download dictionaries, such as Thayer's (Greek) and BDB (Hebrew) definitions so you can study better. KJV with Strongs works well.

Always have a few translations lying around. If you encounter a difficult passage in your favorite one, check it another one. I used to collect various translations, and I have NIV, NKJV, TEV, and my favorite and the Bible of choice among fellow historicists: the ESV.

On a completely separate note, I'm shocked to my very core that the KJV Onlyists didn't hijack this thread and turn it into a platform for accusing everyone that posted so far of being indoctrinated into the Alexandrian Cult. I'm shocked, but I'm not disappointed... remember, those are two completely separate emotions. :)

I use PC Bible a lot. It has many versions to compare as well as Interlinear Greek & Hebrew (gee computers make it easy). Really easy to use for us non-scholarly types.
If I had to be stuck with one version only, I think I'd stick with the New American Standard as it is supposed to be a very direct translation from the original languages (some may want to debate that). The NIV is easier to read but I don't think it is quite as good a translation. All the paraphrase Bibles like the Good News and The Message are good to read but I wouldn't want to debate doctrine from them.
