The best I have seen for HTML and much more is:
http://www.w3schools.com/

It will introduce you to the basics and then as you become more confident you can move onto other things. Only thing is as it is very open in its organisation it can be very tempting to go straight for more advanced things you have heard of or seen. This can result in a lot of confusion and disillusionment! So stick to the basics 'til you have them under your belt, then move on to the next section.

But yeah, pretty much the best way is to play with it. Make a website and add to it and play around. When you have made a suitable mess of a site, delete it and start again employing what you have learned and putting a little more thought into it. Then play with that one til it's a mess then start again using what you have learned.

Back in the day when I was learning html, I used http://lissaexplains.com the site is targeted towards kids, but it's presented in such a way that an adult beginner can find it very helpful.

If you want to use a WYSIWYG html program... I'd reccomend dreamweaver or something else other than Frontpage. It stinks like someone wearing the same socks for 5 days, running in the desert, and never bathing. =P

I was told him webdesign classes the best way to learn is to use a text editor and type away. That's how I had been learning for years beforehand. =) You learn more and aborb more of the material that way than just pushing buttons.

In the past I tried several sites but this one is clearly the best.
