  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The following are among the better major NT commentaries. Those that are in bold are, in my opinion, superior in quality, and the ones in parentheses are widely considered virtual must-haves. Additionally, the ones that have a number sign (#) preceding them are forthcoming.
Due to space constraints, I begin with those commentaries covering the Gospels and Acts.

I would say that the best commentaries are the "Twenty-First Century Commentary Series". Mal Couch and a variety of other expositors thoroughly explain books of the New Testament. Also, Mr. Couch has written a commentary on 1st and 2nd Thessalonians called "The Hope of Christ's Return". It is magnificent. The MacArthur Commentarty by John MacArthur also has sound doctrine, as well as John Calvin's Bible Commentary.

My favorite set is Warren Wiersbe's Bible Exposition Commentary:
Pentateuch
OT Histories
Prophets
Wisdom and Poetry
New Testament Vol 1& 2

Also:
Frank E. Gaebelein's Expositor's Bible Commentary (OT: 7 volumes, NT: 6 volumes)

Tyndale Commentary Set (NT and OT)

Great submissions so far in this thread. Thanks!

dcyates,
I see you chose Bruce's commentaries for several books. I am about to pick up his commentary on John's Gospel and epistles (2 in 1 vol). Have you read it, and why did you leave this one out of Bruce's work? (I really like his work, but am buying this one blind based on name and availability ($10 @ christianbook).)
In Christ,
Dave

I obviously like much of the late, great F.F. Bruce's works myself. He was a truly superlative NT scholar and this is amply evidenced by the fact that he at one time or another produced a major commentary on virtually every book of the NT. However, he largely ignored the Gospels, with the sole exception of his commentary on John along with the Johannine epistles, and his real area of expertise was the Pauline literature.

At any rate, whether or not I would personally recommend Bruce's commentary on John and the Johannine letters would depend on what it is you're looking for in such a study. If you wanted it to engage in exegetical research with all the critical issues explored and technically spelled out for the reader, then I would probably rather point you in another direction. Craig Keener's recent two-volume commentary set on the Gospel of John certainly has to be considered one of the very best available right now. And for an excellent treatment of the Johannine epistles, if you only wished to acquire one commentary, I would lean rather heavily toward Colin Kruse's contribution to the Pillar NT Commentary series. Although if you can wait, I would hold out for D.A. Carson's forthcoming work for NIGTC. (Carson has already composed a very good, more technical--yet accessible--commentary on John's Gospel, also for Pillar.)

But, if you wanted a more popularly written study for predominantly expositional purposes, Bruce will do very nicely indeed. He doesn't spell out all his choices and detail the reasons for his conclusions, but it's nonetheless quite obvious that both the research was there and that it was pondered sufficiently prior to him putting pen to paper, as it were. (That and you can hardly beat the price.:))

On Jeremiah 31:31-34 the best commentary I have encountered is the book of Herbrews.

Very good. Scripture interpretes scripture. We must remember all commentaries are man made, therefore failable. Not so God's Word.

Also, as in Bible translations, commentaries come with a background from their editors/writers of viewpoints, biases, and slants. A Lutheran commentary would have substantial differences from a Methodist commentary from a Roman Catholic commentary. That's why it's a good idea to draw from several different commentaries which reflect different traditions/ways of looking at scripture.

Along with this thought, I'd say that too many today are too focused on one tradition and are getting further and further away from historic Christianity. Too much paying attention to the more modern ways of doing things without seeing how they (in large part) don't fit in with what was taught.

I have several Lists of the best commentaries that have been compiled by various Professors over the years. Personally, after I put 12 years study into Greek and Hebrew I winnowed out most of the Commentaries that I had in my personal library. There isn't enough time to do the study I want to do, to be able to also weed out the bad from the good in most commentaries.

I would suggest that you either invest in a copy of The Minister's Library by Barber or suggest it as a present Idea for Christmas or your birthday. Most Seminaries have stopped recommending specific books and just suggest Barber's work. He does a pretty even-handed job of evaluating books in all catagories, he even breaks down positional biases that the authors might favor. Often he will provide denominational information of the Author. He also rates books according to how helpful he believes that they are.

I should have added this, I have saved a lot of money by doing two things. Never buying a book until I have really needed it at least 3 times. Yes, this can be a real pain if you don't live near a Seminary with a good library. But it helps you to determine the value of the book to your needs. Second, I always consult Barber about the book, or similar works to see what he has to say about them first. Sometimes there is another work that covers the same topic or area and does a better job. And then a third thing which has only come as the Internet has matured, I do a search for good used copies that might be available. I know that these 3 things have saved me several thousand dollars over the years. Especially, because like DeaconDean I prefer to go for copies that have been put of CD ROM. It saves space, it saves a lot of money and I can take a larger library with me when I go on the road teaching. If, unlike me, you use a PC platform instead of Mac you will find that there are more CD avenues open to you.

A great resource is Ages Master Christian Library vol 8. It has Bible versions, Commentary sets, theologies, word studies, histories, maps, biographies and a lot more on 3 CDs. Plus they sell other CD collections in separate sets. www.ageslibrary.com

I use "The Pulpit Commentaries" on cd-rom. What is it, a 23 or 26 volume set of books condensed on one cd. Condensed isn't the right word because it is the full set of books all volumes on one cd. Rather than pay $300 for the set, I ordered it off of Christianbooks.com for $74. Very good set I might add. Complete with exposition of every book in the Bible along with 3 Homilies (right word?) of each book. Deep exposition of Hebrew and Greek words. Here is a link to it:

For some good examples see posts #21 & #22 in this thread, I used the Pulpit Commentaries when posting here:
