Hehehe....I was freakin!!!! However, I read an article somewhere where it says that the "last" Pope(Peter the Great) was added and not on the original list - has anyone else seen this??

Oremus pro beatissimo Papa nostro Benedicto. Dominus conservet eum, et vivicet eum, et beatum faciat eum in terra, et non tradat eum in animam inimicorum ejus. Amen.

Let us pray for our blessed Pope Benedict. May the Lord preserve him, and give him life, and make him blessed on earth, and not deliver him into the will of his enemies. Amen.
Ok Paul...I bet you are peeing in your pants over this, LOL!!! I'm not betting on the married clergy from an earlier thread (remember?).....

I think this is a great choice. The Holy Spirit has shown us who the man (actually men) for our time is. Ratzinger was in dialogue with many of the more orthodox Anglican groups, etc prior to his election - I think he will do wonders for ecumenity without compromising the faith. I'm just hoping I don't have to start learning my Latin as he is a traditionalist!!

God bless Pope Benedict!!!

I hope Pope Benedict (I really have to get used to that) will continue the orthodoxy he showed as Prefect of the CDF. The commentary I'm hearing says that Pope Benedict XV was a moderate, following the hard line Pius X took against Modernism, so if he's wanting to honour Benedict XV, that worries me a bit. They're also saying that his stance was part of his job, being the "bad cop" to John Paul II's role as "good cop". But maybe a more moderate stance is what is needed - there's a way to speak the truth that Catholicism is the one true religion and others are not without putting down everyone else.

But we'll see. God's in charge, and He promised the gates of hell will not prevail. I like what I've seen so for from Cardinal Ratzinger, but I think the Church really needs some discipline, starting with the replacement of those bishops who get too far out of line.

And I wouldn't call Ratzinger a traditionalist. He's definitely conservative, but I'm pretty sure the Missal of Paul VI will remain the Missale Romanum. If it were up to me, the Roman Rite would be the Missal (and Breviary) from around 1954, before the changes to Holy Week which really started the reform leading to the new Mass. But I'd grant an indult for the new Mass before I started reforming it. But I'm not Pope, and I probably never will be, so I'll be happy with a wider grant of the 1962 Missal (although I really miss the older calendar).

I think it's fitting that Psalm 42 was at Lauds today, which I was praying just after the smoke started appearing, and offered my Office today in thanksgiving for the new, yet unknown, Pope and for God to guide him. It's one of my favourite Psalms, since it's also prayed by the priest and servers at the foot of the altar to begin Mass. I prayed it today as though the Pope were saying it, asking God to strengthen him in his new role.

Psalmus 42
Júdica me, Deus, et discérne causam meam de gente non sancta, * ab hómine iníquo, et dolóso érue me.
2 Quia tu es, Deus, fortitúdo mea: * quare me repulísti? et quare tristis incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?
5 Confitébor tibi in cíthara, Deus, Deus meus: * quare tristis es, ánima mea? et quare contúrbas me?
6 Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.

Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy: * deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.
2 For thou art God my strength: why hast thou cast me off? * and why do I go sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?
3 Send forth thy light and thy truth: * they have conducted me, and brought me unto thy holy hill, and into thy tabernacles.
4 And I will go in to the altar of God: * to God who giveth joy to my youth.
5 To thee, O God my God, I will give praise upon the harp: * why art thou sad, O my soul? and why dost thou disquiet me?
6 Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: the salvation of my countenance, and my God.

The last verse especially applies to us all now - spera in Deo. God will guide His Church, and prevent her from teaching error.

I've heard (or read) that he was quite the liberal when VII was going on, but took a "conservative" turn (of course, it all depends on what one would consider liberal vs. conservative when thinking in those terms.)

I've thought before, when I've heard the radical liberals speak badly of him, that he was just doing his job. I'm glad you posted this. It will be interesting to see how his pontificate proceeds! At first I wasn't all that excited (I was really hoping for Schonborn), but, I think he is the right man in these crazy times...and, given his age, I might still be able to see my guy get a chance...

Blessings,
Aaron

Hmm... electing an older-aged Pope, perhaps as a "stop-gap" (considering perhaps that Pope Benedict XVI will act similarly to Pope John Paul II in terms of doctrinal support).....

Sounds an awful lot like the circumstances leading up to the Second Vatican Council. Perhaps Vatican III, a reversion (or clarification or more strictly defined liturgy) from some of Vatican II, will be the legacy of Pope Benedict XVI.

I'm ecstatic that I'm able to be a Catholic during this really cool time! Last year at this time I had only been to mass a few times as a protestant :)

Trent II? ACK!
/me runs and hides under her bed :D
Seriously, I wonder... I'll definitely have to keep eyeballing the news (and this forum!) for new goings-on in the Church...

...and hopefully actually manage to get to RCIA this year, now that I have a driver's license and a car. FINALLY. :D

He's a man who will make a fine Pope. I believe that certain people just have it them, and he has it for sure.

What the Church needs in this time is certainty and direction. Not hyposcrisy and contradicting comments. I think Pope Benedict XVI is the man who will provide that certainty and direction, with the compassion and gentleness that he is actually known for.

I'm really happy to see all of you so excited about Benedict XVI! I was praying for a conservative pope while the election was going on, but the news I read this morning was full of groups who are disappointed. I just feel that a pope who changes the church's stance on homosexuality, abortion etc. will do so much damage... Truth doesn't change with time, and the church should say "this is right", not "what would you like to be right?"

Anyway, may he be a blessing to you all.
