They can choose any name they like including their own or qualities they hope to exemplify such as Pius or Innocent. They often, as I assume this pope has, choose names from great Saints or prior Popes that they admire.

This is so awesome! I really think this is the Holy Spirit speaking to us and telling us that He doesn't want us to greatly digress from His plan. I think Pope Benedict XVI will be an awesome pope!

Other than choosing the name Benedict, does His Holiness Benedict XVI (nearly called him by his original name there!) have any connections with the Benedictine Order? Or perhaps something else that would relate to him being "the glory of the Olives" according to Saint Malachy?

I feel the same way. I have known none other than John Paul, and it seems really strange, almost sureal.
