Oops...I so broke that rule...*throws her hands in the air and shrugs* It is seductive yes...but I need a guy, so it is all good! *giggles*ShirleyTemple777 said:My ballet teacher did belly dancing, she always said NEVER do it in front of a guy unless you are married to him!

The Egyptian guys in our church hate it, because in their culture the only dance that exists is belly dancing, done in front of rich men who pay enormous amounts of money to wach these girls, often russian girls who learned the dance and who make a fortune from it. One of them was very doubtful that any dance can be not "sleazy" or give glory to God. It was just too hardwired in his head : dance=seducing men.I do hate the "sleazy" misconception. I don't know where it comes from really
Well, I wouldnt want to dance in front of men. But for exercise it's good. The only one I would possibly dance in front off is my husband when I get married.Multi-Elis said:The Egyptian guys in our church hate it, because in their culture the only dance that exists is belly dancing, done in front of rich men who pay enormous amounts of money to wach these girls, often russian girls who learned the dance and who make a fortune from it. DARRIONS said:I've never been interested in it. No offense, but it is very seductive and, even if you don't mean it to be, some guys will get the wrong idea if they see you doing it. If you belly dance for yourself and yourself only(and your husband when you're married) I don't see that much of a problem with it. But in public...? No thanks. I'm not saying that you guys are belly dancing with wrong intentions, but it is very seductive and sleazy, in my personal opinion.

pegatha said:I think Middle Eastern dance is incredibly beautiful. I studied it when I was younger, but I found it was something I couldn't really tell people about because of the misperception that it was somehow associated with stripping or other objectionable things. Even recently, when I was taking a ballroom dance class with some of my friends& our husbands, some of them noticed some flyers for a bellydance class being offered at the same studio, and started laughing at the idea. So for those of you who are studying bellydance, do you have that problem? How do you handle it (especially if you go to a very conservative church)? Or are you a "closet" bellydancer? (I'm not concerned with the origins and history of the dance, whether or not it was really performed just for other women, etc., only with the present misconception of it as something on the sleazy side.)

I do hate the "sleazy" misconception. I don't know where it comes from really (there are other traditional dances that aren't considered objectionable)...maybe because the more well-known costumes show the midriff, and for some reason people think that's a horrible thing. I don't know, I don't get it. I wish people weren't so ignorant, but in the meantime I really don't mention it to anybody.
