  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I do a lot of belly dancing. People say I am a natural. I never took a class either. I just got into it when I joined SCA (Society for Creative Anachronisms) it is a medieval reenactment group I am in, SCA is worldwide. The persona I play is Welsh Romani(gypsy)/pirate, so it is a lot of fun.

Being the modest sort, I'm inclined to agree with your teacher. But there are also BD teachers who push their students to perform publicly so as to generate publicity for the school. I think it's important to find a teacher who's not only competent, but who respects the individual student's level of modesty.

I do hate the "sleazy" misconception. I don't know where it comes from really
The Egyptian guys in our church hate it, because in their culture the only dance that exists is belly dancing, done in front of rich men who pay enormous amounts of money to wach these girls, often russian girls who learned the dance and who make a fortune from it. One of them was very doubtful that any dance can be not "sleazy" or give glory to God. It was just too hardwired in his head : dance=seducing men.

Well, I wouldnt want to dance in front of men. But for exercise it's good. The only one I would possibly dance in front off is my husband when I get married.

I've never been interested in it. No offense, but it is very seductive and, even if you don't mean it to be, some guys will get the wrong idea if they see you doing it. If you belly dance for yourself and yourself only(and your husband when you're married) I don't see that much of a problem with it. But in public...? No thanks. I'm not saying that you guys are belly dancing with wrong intentions, but it is very seductive and sleazy, in my personal opinion.

I got a couple of belly dancing dvd's today. The "belly dancing for wimps"...this one is great, and "romantic bellydancing". I liked the first one a lot, it's a great workout! And yes, it's a lot harder than it looks! The second one is ok, but the gal who did it is very prideful and arrogant. I didnt care for her at all. But I did learn a few things for when I get married.

I did it once and was humiliated because it was supposed to be a private class with just me and the teacher well come to find out the teacher was a man! And I had to wear a shirt that showed midriff and do these horrific dance moves , never again lol.

I got into belly dancing when I began dating an Egyptian. Come to find out, over in Egypt, there are quite a few male dance teachers--or at least that's what his family told me. Don't give up on it, though. It's fun, it's beautiful, and it's a wonderful cultural experiance.

peace and love,

I understand and appreciate your opinion: my family wasn't too pleased when I began dancing. My father doesn't even believe in dancing (too bad, because dancing is so wonderful). But one thing to keep in mind is that belly dancing (or Raks Sharki) is a vital part of the Middel Eastern culture. I'm courting an Egyptian, and every party that I've ever been to where there are Middle Easteners (wheather Muslim or Christian, Arab or Persian) there has ALWAYS been belly dancing. The vast majority of the women participate in it. Over there, it isn't seen as something dirty--and you don't have to wear revealing clothes. It's simply a form of dance. Yes, there are some women who DO dance in a suductive way; however, the majority don't. Also, it's not seen as something bad unless you're a dancer at a nightclub or something. That's because man--not all--of those dancers are also involved in prostitution. But believe me, belly dancing (or just Middle Eastern dance) is not bad. I love the Lord, yet I have no quams with it. It's just misunderstood and stigmatized in the West.

Hmmm. . . That's so weird. What part of Egypt are they from? The guy I'm seeing is from Alexandria. He and his famiy are all very devout Copts, yet they encourage the dance. Okay, not when you're half-naked and doing a performance. But there are fully clad dancers (esp. tribal styles). His mom was actually the one who taught me how to dance. Then some people from church as well as some other Middle Eastern friends came over and we all danced. Maybe it's just the way it's done that they're talking about. But belly dancing isn't the only form of dance in Egypt: BD is actually Arabic. In Egypt, there are all of the traditional Egyptian dances (including the cane dances). They also dance to more Western styles. My bf is a really good dancer--actually, that's how we met. We started dancing at a friend's party. But I don't think there is a dance that he can't do. I remember watching a bunch of Egyptian movies over at his place. I was surprised to see in some of the films that there were other types of dances. In fact, there were even night clubs! I asked him about it--and he looked at me as if I were crazy. He couldn't believe that I thought that they only belly danced over there! :D

I think Middle Eastern dance is incredibly beautiful. I studied it when I was younger, but I found it was something I couldn't really tell people about because of the misperception that it was somehow associated with stripping or other objectionable things. Even recently, when I was taking a ballroom dance class with some of my friends& our husbands, some of them noticed some flyers for a bellydance class being offered at the same studio, and started laughing at the idea. So for those of you who are studying bellydance, do you have that problem? How do you handle it (especially if you go to a very conservative church)? Or are you a "closet" bellydancer? (I'm not concerned with the origins and history of the dance, whether or not it was really performed just for other women, etc., only with the present misconception of it as something on the sleazy side.)

Yeah, I've got that problem. My father is against dancing. Everyone else in my family think it's dirty and seductive--I won't go into the fact that they've never witnessed a woman actually belly dancing. Some of my friends think it's cool, but others think it's a bad idea. Oh well. I guess they'll never know the joy of dancing to the beat of a tabla or with zills. The beauty and grace of the dance is simply overwhelming. I've done swing dancing before (which I LOVE) as well as played around with some other dance forms, but Raks Sharki is just so. . . beautiful. The isolation of the body, the flowing forms, the enchanting rhythem of the music. . . I love it. Our culture is always screeming to be open minded, and yet we're really narrow-minded. As a Christian, I do have to be careful who I tell and when and how I dance, as it is so stigmatized here. After all, the scriptures tell us not to do something if it causes a brother to stumble. So I just don't let certain people know; but I'll dance for others. I love to dance. I can't help it. It doesn't matter if everyone's dancing, if I'm performing or if I'm dancing alone in my room. I just love to dance.

peace and love

I've just started learning. It's a lot of fun :)
I do hate the "sleazy" misconception. I don't know where it comes from really (there are other traditional dances that aren't considered objectionable)...maybe because the more well-known costumes show the midriff, and for some reason people think that's a horrible thing. I don't know, I don't get it. I wish people weren't so ignorant, but in the meantime I really don't mention it to anybody.

Yeah, I think a lot of it does have to do with the costumes. The only reason why they're like that is to show off the movements that are otherwise hidden. There are the full costumes, but those are often made out of lycra (sp?) for the same reason. Personally, I'm a fan of the midriff ones: not only are they absolutely beautliful, but they also keep me quite a bit cooler when I'm dancing. It gets so HOT dancing!!! Okay, wow--I've posted too much on this thread.

Oh, really quickly: For that girl who asked about Veena and Nina (sp?) and if they sell DVD's, they do. They have a web-site. Don't know it off hand, but if you do a quick internet search you should be able to find it. I have it somewhere. If I remember, I'll try to look for it myself. Good luck!

peace and love
