  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sunday, I went with my boyfriend and his parents and brother to his grandparents' house after church for lunch. (From now on let's call my bf Jon*)
They'd invited us to join them because they'd also prepared lunch for their pastor and his family. Now, I'm very close to Jon's grandma. And, I've been dating Jon for nearly 4 years...
So, we arrived before the pastor and his wife and 3 kids. They got there about ten minutes after we did. All of us stood in the kitchen as Jon's grandmother made introductions. "Pastor, this is my son......this is his son, my grandson, Jon......this is Jon's friend, L.

Very respectfully, I wanted to clear my throat and say loudly, "Actually I'm Jon's girlfriend ! We are much more than just friends :). I love him and his family very much!"
(I'm proud to be his girlfriend. He's good to me!)

No hard feelings toward his grandma either. I guess she feels funny introducing me as her grandson's girlfriend for some odd reason. Jon's mom seems to have the same problem at times, but it's only with certain people she's introducing me to.

Can anybody relate?

Yeah I was introduced to my wife's pastor by her mom as something to the effect of "Melissa's special friend" or something like that. (Maybe my wife can remember exactly the term that was used.)

Fortunutly her pastor's a pretty bright guy and I think he was able to figure it out. And also to be fair, the relationship was fairly new at the time.

I think there are some people, especially in the older generation that don't like to use the term boyfriend or girlfriend as a means of formal introduction.

It gets a lot better when you get engaged because there is a more formal relationship there. Fiance and wife just sound a lot better and a lot more mature then "girlfriend/boyfriend".

And lets be a bit honest here the term boyfriend or girlfriend does sound a bit weird sometimes. At times using the term girlfriend made me feel like a teenager.

Thanks for sharing. Yes, sometimes I think the words "boyfriend" and "girlfriend" do sound a bit high-schoolish and immature. Also I can see why some folks, like Luther mentioned, especially older ones, do not prefer to use these terms to introduce.

I believe Jon's grandparents' pastor caught on rather quickly also that I was not just his "friend" :)
