What does this mean to a believer?

I think it means that NOTHING should come before following Jesus. I think Jesus makes this clear in the parable of the sower.

Many are taught all kinds of different ideas and beliefs throughout their lives, but when you begin following Jesus you must test those ideas and beliefs with God's Word. If you are a real disciple of Christ, then any ideas or beliefs that don't line up with His Word must be put behind you. Your beliefs guide your life. Jesus came to give us life. False ideas and beliefs only bring bondage and death. I love the people in my life, but when they believe anything that disagrees with God's Word, I always put God first. What God has taught me through His Word has brought me life and freedom, where my old ideas and beliefs only brought me misery and pain.
