Clint asked on IHQ about theology reading, so thought it might be a good idea to start a thread here as well.
FWIW I was recommended to start with 'Theology, a very short introduction' by David Ford, and then have on hand Alister McGrath's Christian Theology, an introduction, (Blackwell) currently in 3rd edition I think. David also has a couple of other books that are really useful for getting started.
But theology needs to be interactive and practically based, so the best way forward is to find two or three others who are interested, and read and reflect together, looking at issues that are of immediate concern. That leads like a network into looking beyond what is immediately around you, but you never lose the base of a grounded theology - asking how does this work out in practice and is this in line with what we know of God in the whole Scripture as well as what we need to examine in detail to find good practice here.
Blessings
