I have spent the whole day almost on the computer looking for resources and info on Aspergers. Both my kids were diagnosed with ADHD in K and 1st grade. My 16 yr old has always had trouble with eye contact, got teased in school and only has one friend that comes to the house (yeah for that even though that kid is a handful). My 9 yr old has no friends and says bizarre things often. And dear Lord, she's changing from a little girl in front of my eyes and may need a bra soon.
Both have been noted in testing to have autistic-like behavior, but just qualified under OHI on their IEPs. Why would I want the label? I had to do this with my dd last month or lose the social interventions at school (not that they're doing any good). Two different people are supposed to be calling me tomorrow about weekly social skills group for my kids. It will be a drive and cost $, but I think I may do it for my son before he ages out of these kind of opportunities. I will probably sent my dd to a week long day camp next month at a school that is just for Aspies and works on all the social issues that she has. I have heard of this school and wish my dd could get support like this at her own.
A lady from a tutoring center put me in contact with a mom who had problems with my school district for her dd's issues. She gave me some pointers to help me better advocate for me kids. This is daunting. My son is not getting the support he needs in math and wasted the whole last year in a class he wasn't prepared for. She also encouraged me to have my kids reevaluated at our Regional center because she heard they might start providing some assistance to higher functioning kids. I guess I'm thinking it's time for an official diagnosis.
Uhhh! So much to do for them both and how to make time to get in some Summer fun when I have my own homework to do for my BS? I'm just venting now, but if anyone has any suggestions for this journey I would appreciate them. Also, if anyone can learn from these experiences that would be good too.
On a lighter note, I got a $50 gift card to a local store for having my dd take part in a one day testing measuring her responses to stress. We had to collect her spit 6 times and fill out a load of questionaires too.
