All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing praise to your name." Selah. Psalms 66:4
How do you approach God when you are praying to him? Or when you are meditating on how wonderful God is? Do you have a sense that you are in the presence of the Almighty?
Having a look in the Bible it is quite deep to see how many of the patriarchs reacted when in the presence of God. Adam hid himself when he had sinned. Moses had to take his shoes off in God's presence. The Priests had to enter the sancturary with bells on their tassels so people could check they were still alive while in the presenece of God. Daniel in vision was totally moved. John fell on his face, and this was in the presence of an angel of the Lord. We are even told that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. Revelation even refers to the figures of beasts bowing before the almight crying "Holy, Holy, Holy".
Does God need millions of people fawning at his feet? Of course not, but like little children who bring drawings and special food and cakes home from school to their parents, it is an expression of love. Just as kids feel all warm and appreciated when we thank them, so God inhabits the praise of his people when we bring our gifts of praise to him.
As a parent I am overwhelmed as I watch my children grow, develop their own nuances, sense of humour. When they come to me when they need a cuddle a shoulder to cry on or a kiss and more and more it dawns on me how this respect shown in family life is shown to an even mightier God who is far beyond even our own thinking. We go to him with our joys, our anger our sorrow, and yet as loving as God is we never lose our respect!! So next time you kneel in prayer remember it should not because it is ritual, but because he is holy.
