Our class is tackling Matthew 13 tomorrow, and I am leading it.

Election is sure to come up in our discussion.

I have seen a beautiful quote somewhere in this forum that basically said the Bible constantly alludes to election. Election is a mysterious thing that we cannot possibly understand, but since God is sovereign we must accept it as truth.

This is not the quote......but it is along those lines....and the quote certainly helped me.

Would anyone happen to know the quote that I'm talking about. I've seen it in this forum more than once, but wouldn't know where to go to find it.

Thanks!!!!

Was it the A.W. Tozer one?

“God will not hold us responsible to understand the mysteries of election, predestination, and the divine sovereignty. The best and safest way to deal with these truths is to raise our eyes to God and in deepest reverence say, "0 Lord, Thou knowest." Those things belong to the deep and mysterious Profound of God's omniscience. Prying into them may make theologians, but it will never make saints.”

The Tozer quote is nonsense. He simply didn't like the Biblical doctrine of election but couldn't refuse the fact that it is Biblical. God's sovereign election and predestination are among the most wonderful and beautiful truths taught in the Scriptures. They aren't difficult to understand just impossible for natural man to submit to.

Agreed. He wanted to avoid an argument but he clearly teaches Arminianism throughout his work.

I am one who believes in both election and free will.

I can very well imagine God creating key men for key positions (both believers and non-believers) to help play out his master plan.

I can also very well imagine this same God permitting free will for those of us who were not created as key players in the master plan.

I have no problem with this "compromised" belief. For the scripture seems to support both election AND free will.

But I cannot refute the fact that there is election. I just do not know to what degree.

Therefore election remains a MYSTERY to me and A W Tozer's quote helps to keep me focused on the real important parts of the Gospel.

.....

My thoughts on election/'free will' go something like this: I believe that God created Billy Graham from the beginning of time to play a special role in his plan. I also believe that God created Judas Ischariot to play a key role in his plan. One was obviously chosen for eternal life. I doubt that the other one was.

It is possible that God predestined me to be one of his own, but something tells me that I was one of those who was given the option of free will.

My thoughts on election may evolve from this point some day. One never knows. I was raised a total "Arminian" and now I'm somewhere in between. I do believe there is election. I also believe that there is free will.

Again: A.W. Tozer's quote helps me with this.
