All religions of any value teach about detachment from self.
St John of the Cross wrote about it and described it as detachment from the appetites.
Echart Tolle, describes the false self which the ego identifies with.
It's a false image that we like to project toward others for selfish reasons.
I'll be liked more, all be more popular if I'm wealthier or lose weight and
become more buff, etc. In other words, if I act according to the way that
society values most, I'll be better in the eyes of the world.
God doesn't see us this way and knows our true selves. Our task with His
help is to become the person God had in mind when he created us, that is
the true person we are and not the false image we try to project.
Self-knowledge is part of learning to become a good Christian and it's part
of spiritual development.
