"Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Romans 5:1

Sometimes people don't want to be themselves but pretend to be somebody else. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby deals with such a man. A native of North Dakota, this man changes his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. While in military training for World War 1, he falls in love with a southern belle far his superior in wealth and culture. When he works for a rich man who has a yacht, he learns what it means to be rich. Gatsby wants to be like that, so he becomes a prominent bootlegger and soon has enough money to buy a big mansion on Long Island. People attend his parties, not because they are his friends but because the drinks are free. Even in death he plays the role of another, for he is shot by someone who mistakes him for another.

Be what you are! Those who blindly copy the lifestyles of other people may harbor this desire because they don't like themselves. But, God loves them, each one as an individual. This love He proved when through His Son He redeemed them as persons, as St. Paul declares, "God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Rom 5:8)

Having by faith become a new creation in Christ, you have the right to be what you are -- an honest, upright person using the distinctive talents and gifts God has given you. I pray that God will remove all pretense from our hearts and give us the desire to be ourselves: redeemed children of God.

In His service,
Matt

Well said! And may God heal the wounds and scars of those who have a wall around their hearts. Walls need to come down so people can receive God's love into their hearts and experience the joy that comes with knowing that God loves us for who we are. It doesn't matter what the world thinks of us, what matter is what God thinks of us. And once we realize that God loves us, then we will be able to love ourselves and, in turn, love others. We will no longer live in fear and, instead, experience the peace that freedom brings when we can be true to ourselves and know that our security comes from God, not from others or the world. May we all be blessed with God's peace and let our true colors shine! Amen!

I have a wall around my heart at the moment. I opened it to someone in the world and they hurt it terribly. I am trying to remove it so that I can be open hearted before God, but I guess it will take some time.

It is really hard seeing your self as God sees you; who you really are and what that is worth- His Son even if you were the only person who had ever sinned.

We are too ready to measure ourselves in the worlds units: success, wealth, popularity, etc, etc, rather than God's standards which tend to be the reverse: humility, generosity, willingness to make a stand, etc, etc. The Kingdoms values are inverse to the worlds as often as not.

(PS great thread!)

Unfortunately, to be able to give and receive, to love and be loved you must open yourself, and be prepared to be hurt again

This is true, but why not look at is as a plaster cast rather than a wall? Whilst protected, healing happens. Strength is gained. So the day the cast comes off, the heart is a little stronger, a little wiser.

Why should i be someone else :) i'm perfectly happy to be me !
And when we say it doesn't matter what the world think of us, let it be not only words, but reality... which is quite hard at times... I don't care being like the world, they're not saved, they're not forgiven... but i care about my life, and everything's not bad in the world after all.
