God in Genesis 1:28 says to be fruitful. Some regard this as a command, and some see it as a promise of God looking favorably on those who take advantage of all things that God put on earth and bear fruit from their efforts. To many, anything that God says should be seen as a command to all of us, so what God says in the above passage applies to all of us.
God in Genesis 1:28 also commands us to multiply. Well, we cannot continue to multiply unless we have an environment that is conducive to supporting life and providing an ambience that allows for people to bear children.
It is good that we, together, look to be fruitful and to multiply. Loving God and our neighbor promotes both. The Bible coaxes us to do our best. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men...” Proverbs 21:5 says, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” Proverbs 10:4 says, “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”
God did not mean for us to deny ourselves the things that will enable us to prosper and to multiply. For that reason, passages like 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 should be read with caution. Some say we should prepare as if the worst is here, given that end will come to us eventually. But others believe these verses are telling us not to burden ourselves with things that may deter us from prospering. So, if a person you’re interested in marrying would be more burdensome to you than helpful, then don’t marry them. In a sense, while God says to help the poor and needy, He did not necessarily imply that we need to marry the people we help.
As far as acting as if you don’t possess the property you do possess, the Bible mentions in several places not to expect to hold on to property. It is one thing to gain it, and another to hold it. In the Parable of the Rich Fool in Luke 12:13-21, a person stores up riches for the future, only to be told that God requires his soul now. The Bible implies that if you’re only going to store what you’ve gained, you should give it to the poor and needy.
Do not deny your God-give abilities but do your best in His name.
